🔘 KEKW

What does KEKW mean on Twitch?

◻️Laughter

In Twitch chat, KEKW represents laughter. It is used similarly to LOL and lulz by gamers who want to show that something made them laugh.

Where does KEKW come from?
KEKW is a combination of KEK, which is the Korean equivalent of LOL, and the letter W, which Twitch chat users often use to convey an exaggerated facial expression. Together, KEK + W became KEKW - a term that means "exaggerated, hearty laughter."
However, KEKW took off only after it became a Twitch emote (a word that is linked to and can transform into a specific picture when entered in Twitch chat). The FrankerFaceZ Twitch extension linked KEKW with a picture of "Spanish Laughing Guy" Juan Joya Borja, a comedian and actor who is most famous for a memetic interview he gave in 2007. (You can watch the interview below.) Twitch users loved the "Spanish Laughing Guy" emote so much that they began using it and KEKW more frequently.

How is KEKW used?
These days, you may see both the KEKW emote and the term itself pop up in Twitch chat when a streamer does something amusing or embarrassing, or when another Twitch chat user says something funny. Users with access to the KEKW emote can enter :KEKW: in Twitch chat to generate the emote. If you don't want to use the KEKW emote, you can just enter KEKW itself in chat to represent hearty laughter.

❓Example

What a wild, hilarious game. KEKW KEKW

🔘 GNST

What does GNST stand for?

◻️Good night, sleep tight
GNST is a common way to end a conversation online or in a text message before going to bed. It stands for "good night, sleep tight," which is a popular saying for wishing a goodnight's rest for a person.

Where did GNST come from?

There are no clear origins for the actual saying, but one common narrative comes from the 1800s when tight strings or ropes that supported a mattress translated into a restful sleep. People began using GNST as shorthand for the saying in the 2000s as the Internet and cell phone usage increased.

When do I use GNST?
You can use GNST in texts, emails, and online when it's late at night and you are about to go to bed. Or you may use it when you know the recipient is going to rest, possibly taking a mid-day nap due to a newborn baby or working the night shift.

❓Example

🔘 Radio Baby

What is a radio baby?

◻️A person born between 1928 and 1945
A radio baby is a person that is part of The Silent Generation, the period when people are born between 1928 and 1945. They are born after members of The Greatest Generation and before the Baby Boomer (boomers) generation.
The name comes from the advent and subsequent prevalence of radios during the period in which they were born. In America, radio babies grew up during the Great Depression and World War II, which left an indelible mark on them. Because of this time of scarcity and uncertainty, their generation is significantly smaller than the generations before and after them.
In general, radio babies are parents of boomers and Gen Xers and grandparents of millennials and Gen Zers (aka zoomers). Additionally, the generation is often characterized as conforming to traditionalism (also known as "traditionalists"), hard-working, financially prudent, and resilient.

❓Example
My grandpa was a radio baby and so concerned about us not wasting any food.
Yeah, The Great Depression definitely left a mark on him.

🔘 Snowmageddon

What kind of storm is a snowmageddon?

◻️A powerful snowstorm
Snowmageddon is a weather event that produces a lot of snow, prompting the feeling that the world is about to end, thus the "armageddon" attachment to "snow." For example, if an impending snowstorm is predicted to dump 2 feet of snow, people may say, "Stay off the roads for snowmageddon!"
Since social media loves hyperbole, you will likely see the snowmageddon online as people freak out about a storm. Additionally, the term is very subjective since people and regions have different experiences with snow. For example, someone from Minnesota is used to a foot of snow from a snowstorm, but someone from Alabama is not.
While some people use snowmageddon seriously, some may use it mockingly. For example, if a snowstorm doesn't live up to projections from a dire forecast, people may remark, "Those 4 inches from snowmageddon really ended the world."

❓Example
Be sure to stock up on food before the snowmageddon this weekend!
Already did!

🔘 Parennial

What is a parennial?

◻️A parent born between 1981 and 1996

A parennial is a millennial parent, which means they were born between 1981 and 1996, and most likely have one or more Gen Z or Gen Alpha kids. The name comes from the combination of "parent" and "millennial" and is not to be confused with the "perennial" flower.
Parennials rose to prevalence in the 2010s as most began parenting in the mid-to-late- 2010s. Many are raising kids side-by-side with technology, such as smartphones and tablets, and total immersion in social media, which is brand new territory compared to previous generations. Additionally, many parennials are parenting kids differently than previous generations, becoming more involved and protective.
You will likely see parennial online in parenting forums or hear the term used by a Gen Xer or boomer. Additionally, people may use parennial positively or negatively depending on how they view the parenting styles.

❓Example

My dad sneered at the way parennials coddle their kids.
Of course, he did. He raised himself because his dad was absent his whole life and his mom worked most of the day.

🔘 Savage

What does savage mean?

◻️Viciously cool
When something or someone is "savage," it is "extremely good" or "viciously cool." Although the formal definition of savage normally means "wild" or "untamed," the slang term plays off this definition to describe something cool in a BA sort of way.
Savage is similar to the sick and beast terms that began as negative terms but have been flipped to describe something as cool or good. People commonly pair savage with the AF acronym to accentuate the coolness of something or someone. For example, a skater may describe a trick as "savage af."

❓Example
Bro, he's savage on the court, don't get too fresh.

🔘 March Madness

What is March Madness?

◻️NCAA Basketball Tournament
March Madness is the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament that begins in March and lasts three weeks. The tournament's first year was in 1939 with just eight teams, but it has since expanded to 68 teams for the men and 64 for the women.
Origin of March Madness
The name "March Madness" originated in 1939 when Illinois high school official Henry V. Porter used the term in an essay for the Illinois Interscholastic describing the Illinois high school boys basketball tournament. However, it wasn't popularized in relation to the NCAA tournament until 1982, when CBS broadcaster Brent Musburger uttered it during tournament TV coverage.
Growth of March Madness
Since 1982, the name has become synonymous with the tournament as it has grown into one of the premier American sporting events. Even if you are not a sports fan, you will see the name everywhere during March, including on TV, on social media, in advertisements, and in bracket pool office competitions.

❓Example

Busted after the first day.

🔘 Comfort Idol

What is a comfort idol?

◻️A celebrity whose actions soothe you

A comfort idol is any celebrity whose actions charm you and help you retain your faith in humanity. The phrase is mainly used to refer to K-pop stars (often called idols) whose fans regard them as cute, wholesome, and humorous.
Around August 2020, Twitter's community of K-pop stans began sharing various versions of a tweet that read "everyone has that one idol that they go to for comfort. seeing their face reminds them that they're going to be okay." Each tweet had a heartwarming video or picture of the tweeter's favorite K-pop idol attached. Because the Internet is sometimes good, more and more Twitter users latched on to the comfort idol meme, sharing cute photos and videos of mostly K-pop idols, but sometimes other celebrities.

🔘 Stunad

What is a stunad?

◻️An unintelligent person

A "stunad" is a person who lacks common sense (otherwise known as "stupid" or even "crazy"). It is a derogatory term people (typically Italians) may utter when annoyed by someone making stupid decisions.

For example, if your brother borrows money from you and gambles it away, you might say, "I can't believe I lent that stunad any money." Or, if your friend gets hit by a reckless driver, she might exclaim, "That stunad nearly killed me because she was texting and driving!"

Origin of stunad

The slang term "stunad" originates from Italian-American immigrants. Stunad (or "stunod") comes from "stonato" (or "stunat" or "stunatu" depending on the language variation), an Italian word for "out of tune." It became slang for people who were out of tune with the rest of the world, whether it be in an unintelligent or crazy manner.

❓Example

A TikToker's green person is someone they met by chance but now couldn't live without. You may see people refer to "their green person" in videos that answer the questions "Who is your green?" or "Who's your green person?" These videos are part of TikTok's color person trend.
What is TikTok's color person trend?

🔘 Manspreader

What does manspreader mean?

◻️A guy who sits with his legs spread wide

A manspreader is a male who sits with his legs spread in a very wide stance. He is commonly seen on a subway, bus, airplane, and park bench.

Manspreaders may sound harmless but can wreak havoc in many ways. One of the biggest negatives of a manspreader is when space is at a premium, such as a busy restaurant or subway car, and his wide stance prevents others from sitting down. Public campaigns have been launched to increase awareness of this epidemic but many men have staunchly defended their position citing male biological reasons.

❓Example

Cyberslacking is when a person surfs the Internet during company time or uses his work email for personal reasons. It typically begins when taking a brief break from work but often extends into a longer period of scrollaxing.

Cyberslacking is believed to be one of the biggest wastes of a company's money because the productivity of the cyberslacker dips sharply. Some companies implement measures to prevent or reduce cyberslacking, such as the blocking of popular websites like Facebook or Twitter.

🔘 Rage Applying

What is rage applying?

◻️Applying to open job positions out of spite for your current job

Rage applying is when you are so furious with something that happened at work that you start applying to other open positions. For example, if your boss takes credit for the work you put into a presentation, you might head back to your desk, and rage apply to ten open positions.

While rage applying happened before 2023, the trend gained prominence in January 2023 as job transiency skyrocketed in 2020 when covid shook the world. Also, as Gen Zers have entered the workforce, they don't have the same allegiance to employers as previous generations. Additionally, they are more likely to prioritize their mental health over their career, making it easier for them to change jobs.

For some, rage applying is a fleeting moment that doesn't lead to a new job. Instead, it's a way to blow off steam, especially if they feel a need to be loyal to their employer. However, for others, rage applying leads to new jobs and opportunities and a chance at a better work environment and benefits.

Other job-related slang
Since we spend so much of our lives working, there is plenty of slang related to work. For example, quiet quitting and "The Great Resignation" are similar to rage applying. Also, there are plenty of acronyms, such as AWLTP, B2W, GBTW, and BFAW.

❓Example
I can't stand it here anymore. Too much gossip and toxicity. After my break, I'm gonna rage apply on Indeed.

TTYL is commonly used when texting and messaging online to say, "Talk to you later" at the end of a conversation. It is one of several variations, including "TTUL," "T2UL," and "t2ul8r."

Most people send it to others they think they will talk to again at another point in time, such as a friend or acquaintance. They may have just ended an online gaming match or need to go into a meeting and can't talk until later.

TTYL is ambiguous since "later" is very subjective. It could refer to a period of time in minutes, hours, days, weeks, or even months. You'll need to discern the immediacy of the "later" from the context of your conversation.
