Key takeaways from NASA's latest Artemis media conference, with the intervention of Jessica Jensen, VP of Customer Operations and Integration at SpaceX:

Artemis 3 has been pushed back to September 2026 to "give Artemis teams more time to work through the challenges". "Artemis 4 remains on track for September 2028", per former Senator Bill Nelson.

On-orbit ship-to-ship propellant transfer demos are intended to be conducted starting this same year, but not on IFT-3. That flight test will feature a propellant transfer test from S28's header tank to its main tank, though. Hardware for IFT-3 is expected to be ready this month and, if all goes according to plan, a new FAA license should be issued in February, according to Jessica.

SpaceX intends to "do an uncrewed landing on the Moon and then ascend from the surface" in 2025 to ensure crew safety before Artemis 3. They will do as many integrated flight tests as they can before that landing takes place.

The number of refills Starship will have to undergo for Artemis is still to be determined, but is currently expected to be ~10. That number will probably go down as SpaceX continues to test and iterate.

‍It feels very surreal that the team is now walking around the SpaceX campus texting each other from our off the shelf, and unmodified, test phones sending normal 4G LTE data packets up to our first 6 satellites and back down to the other test phones.

Some highlights on the Starship side of the All Hands talk.

Flight 2 Ship 25 EOM:
"So Flight 2 actually almost made it to orbit. In fact, ironically, if it had a payload, it would have made it to orbit, because the reason that it actually didn't quite make it to orbit was we vented the liquid oxygen, and the liquid oxygen ultimately led to fire and an explosion. Because we wanted to vent the liquid oxygen because we normally wouldn't have that liquid oxygen if we had a payload."

"So ironically, if it had a payload, it would have reached orbit. And so I think we've got a really good shot of reaching orbit with flight three and then a rapid cadence to achieve full and rapid reusability."

Flight 3:
"Flight three, we want to get to orbit and we want to do an in-space engine burn from the header tank and prove that we can reliably de-orbit."

Many references to the importance to NASA Artemis. Wants to overachieve and make Moon Base Alpha a reality.

Two Towers at Starbase:
"So this is we're going to really be launching a lot and up and we're going to be upgrading one tower while we launch from another tower. So two towers is important."

Point to Point:
"It's going to fly a lot. It has to fly a lot. So it's going to end up flying several times a day from many different locations in the world. And I think there's a pretty good chance that it does Earth-to-Earth transport as well. Because the fastest way to get from one place to another on Earth is, you know, to get from here to the other side of Earth is an intercontinental ballistic missile, but just make sure you delete the nuke and add the landing part. Basically, it's the fastest way to get somewhere."

Other notes include Version 2 of Ship and Version 3. Talk of 150 meters as how much the vehicle could stretch to. Also, a lot of "make life interplanetary" Mars references.

SpaceX is working to qualify Falcon 9 boosters for reuse on up to 40 flights each, having achieved 19 flights with a single booster last year.

Also demonstrated a 3-day launchpad turnaround and aiming for under 24 hours by the end of this year.
