Myth Busting: "Brahmins oppressed Shudras for thousands of years"

The claim that "Brahmins oppressed Shudras for thousands of years" is a myth largely manufactured and exaggerated during British rule.

In reality, large-scale caste oppression and untouchability as described today were not part of India’s social fabric before the British arrived. Whatever instances did exist were isolated and later magnified a hundredfold by colonial narratives.

Hindu dharma is not built on the Western idea of “equality” but on coherence and balance, just as nature itself functions in harmony. From the elephant to the ant, every being has its role, and all coexist within an interconnected order.

In earlier times, there were no large industries, and education was not standardized to produce factory or blue-collar workers, as it later became under modern systems. Education was optional, not restricted. Brahmins never systematically prevented others from learning.

The economy was primarily based on cottage industries, which were almost entirely managed by Shudras. Castes were essentially skill-based, with professions handed down within families, much like traditional trades.

There was no widespread oppression- communities lived in harmony, each fulfilling their own duties. Untouchability was related more to hygiene in rituals than to hatred or social exclusion.

It is logically implausible that 10% of the population could oppress 90% for 3,000 years without any major revolt. Much of the atrocity literature stems from figures like Ambedkar, Periyar, and Phule with a British agenda, and was further amplified by British colonialists, Marxists, and missionaries.

When India followed Manusmriti, it was known as the “golden bird” and held the position of the world’s largest economy. Moreover, scholars point out that the version of Manusmriti widely circulated today is not authentic- something even Gandhi acknowledged.

According to the original Manusmriti, a Brahmin was given a harsher punishment than a Shudra for committing the same crime, because a Brahmin was expected to be a knower of dharma—and if such a person still committed a crime, it was considered a greater offense. This reflects the fairness and depth of the justice system in India during the time of Manusmriti.

प्राचीन काल में बड़े उद्योग नहीं थे और शिक्षा का ढाँचा आधुनिक कारखाने या मजदूर तैयार करने के लिए नहीं बनाया गया था। उस समय शिक्षा वैकल्पिक थी, बाध्यकारी नहीं। ब्राह्मणों ने कभी संगठित रूप से दूसरों को शिक्षा से वंचित नहीं किया।

भारत की अर्थव्यवस्था मुख्यतः कुटीर उद्योगों पर आधारित थी, जिनका संचालन अधिकांशतः शूद्रों के हाथों में था। जातियाँ वास्तव में कौशल-आधारित थीं, जहाँ व्यवसाय पिता से पुत्र तक परंपरा के रूप में चलते थे।

उस समय व्यापक उत्पीड़न नहीं था, समाज के सभी वर्ग अपने-अपने कर्तव्यों का पालन करते हुए सामंजस्य के साथ रहते थे। अस्पृश्यता भी अधिकतर शुचिता और धार्मिक संस्कारों से जुड़ी थी, न कि घृणा या सामाजिक बहिष्कार से।

यह तर्कसंगत रूप से असंभव है कि 10% लोग 90% लोगों को 3,000 वर्षों तक दबाते रहें और कोई बड़ा विद्रोह न हो। तथाकथित अत्याचार साहित्य का अधिकांश हिस्सा अंबेडकर, पेरियार और फुले जैसे व्यक्तियों तथा ब्रिटिश औपनिवेशिक एजेंडे से निकला, जिसे आगे चलकर मार्क्सवादियों और मिशनरियों ने भी बढ़ावा दिया।

जब भारत मनुस्मृति के सिद्धांतों पर चलता था, तब वह "सोनें की चिड़िया" कहलाता था और विश्व की सबसे बड़ी अर्थव्यवस्था था। विद्वानों का मानना है कि आज जो मनुस्मृति प्रचलित है, वह असली नहीं है, यहाँ तक कि गांधीजी ने भी इसे स्वीकार किया।

मूल मनुस्मृति के अनुसार, समान अपराध करने पर ब्राह्मण को शूद्र से भी कठोर दंड दिया जाता था, क्योंकि ब्राह्मण को धर्म का ज्ञाता माना जाता था और यदि वह फिर भी अपराध करता, तो यह और भी गंभीर अपराध समझा जाता। यह उस समय के न्याय-तंत्र की निष्पक्षता और गहराई को दर्शाता है।
