Creating enough fear and chaos over 1 "death" from the "plague" aka the same routine 6 years back just different words and narrative. Anthropic warns that small AI models may be months away from self-replicating across poorly secured smart TVs and other internet-connected devices. Its research suggests future AI worms could run on consumer hardware rather than depend on a data center, making them harder to shut down through a single central service.
Researchers ran Gemma4-26B-A4B across 15 off-brand Android TV boxes costing about $55 each. Every box had 4GB of RAM and stored part of the model. Together, the devices achieved 0.39 tokens per second, showing that cheap hardware can support a large model, although very slowly.
