In the remote corridors of The Clink, something unspeakable is stirring. Staff work under buzzing fluorescents, patients come and go — but at night, reality bends. Screams slip through the vents, shadows cross closed doors, and not everything in the hospital is alive.

Isabel, a young African nurse with braided hair and steady hands, suffers from Nightmare Disorder — nightly terrors she’s kept secret for years. But when her ex-boyfriend Yami is admitted after a violent psychotic break, her dreams begin to bleed into waking life. Yami speaks in tongues, levitates, and whispers secrets no one should know. He insists something followed him and it wants Isabel.

As priests and patients spiral into fear, Warden Malik prepares in secret. He knows this isn't mental illness. It's something older. And Isabel? She may be the only thing standing between this world and the next.

Detective Mo Zhiming is drawn into a case by Xiangzhi White, who claims her boyfriend, chef Qiang Dazhuang, has developed a grotesque, insatiable appetite. She reveals they once hunted and ate a panda in Sichuan, after which Qiang’s gluttony spiraled. Mo suspects a psychological disorder, but Xiangzhi fears possession by a temple deity — later identified as Taotie, a mythical gluttonous beast from The Classic of Mountains and Seas. She leaves a panda pelt as proof, then vanishes, along with Qiang.

Mo’s investigation leads him to a shut-down restaurant, Volcano Barbecue, linked to illegal wildlife trade and cannibalism. Would Mo find Qiang and rescue the victims in the underground? The story leaves a stark reminder of humanity’s thin line between desire and monstrosity.
