A picture of dog poop near a parked car can set off a diatribe against irresponsible pet owners. CCTV footage of children or elderly residents being chased by dogs, or a rambunctious animal in a lift, can trigger altercations and threats of police cases. Both camps come armed with government circulars. Some demand registration certificates for pet dogs, as is mandatory under Delhi and Gurugram municipal rules. Others cite Animal Welfare Board of India guidelines against harassment and restrictions on pets in lifts.

'Holding on to this newfound Hindu vote bank, however, will require more work, with his political rival Sheikh Hasina’s impending return, disturbing diktats by Islamist radicals against those who follow other faiths, and opposition parties offering minorities more sops.'

'The rise of SIMI — using much the same language Sharjeel Imam now draws on — was different. Blocked by endemic social exclusion and communal discrimination, a new cohort of educated young Muslims had been drawn to the organisation. Scholar Yoginder Sikand perceptively noted that SIMI’s jihadist polemic gave its members “a sense of agency that was absent in their everyday lives.”'

Opinion: 'As you read this, owl trade is peaking. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) suggests that of the 30 odd species of owls found in India, about half are entrapped in this nefarious, illegal mess. The most popular species are the Indian Eagle Owl, the Barn Owl, the Spotted Owlet. The Wildlife SOS adds to this list the Brown Fish Owl and Dusky Eagle Owl — both of whom, along with the Indian Eagle Owl, sport feather tufts — a specially desirable attribute for sacrifice.'
