CNN host resorts to funny faces as Scott Jennings bluntly explains to her how Trump’s “extreme language” led to a “glass half-full” moment with Iran.

ABBY PHILLIP: “The threats from Trump to… bomb them… off the face of the earth. How are those not empty threats?”

JENNINGS: “Well, it looks like it brought them to the table tonight and got them in a place where they would agree to a ceasefire.”

[Phillip makes a face]

PHILLIP: “Scott, that is not connected to reality.”

JENNINGS: “We have a ceasefire, Abby! Do we not?”

PHILLIP: “Fundamentally, the only thing that has been agreed to is that Iran will continue to control the Strait of Hormuz and will allow ships to go through under its control.”

JENNINGS: “The Strait is going to be reopened, and we’re going to negotiate about the rest.”

“Yesterday, Iran was saying, ‘We’re not going to continue the talks.’ The President uses some extreme language, and all of a sudden, voila, tonight we have a ceasefire for two weeks.”

[Phillip resorts to making another stupid face]

“Why can’t we look at this as a glass half-full moment as opposed to ‘We have to make it negative for Donald Trump’?”

Actor Seth Green thought Bill Maher would love to hear how Trump inspired him to read 1984.

What happened next was something he didn’t expect.

Instead of trashing Trump, Maher flipped the script and gave Green a blunt observation about “liberal dogma” that he had “never thought about in that way.”

It all started when Green brought up “thought crime.”

GREEN: “When was the last time you read 1984? I read it in 2016 when Trump was running… But the main thing was getting down to thought crime… where you thinking something is an arrestable offense.”

MAHER: “But that’s a hate crime.”

GREEN: “Well, this is it, right? We’re edging that territory.”

MAHER: “We’re not edging. It’s been decades since we said we believe in this country that there is such a thing as a hate crime. Now, that’s basic liberal dogma. I consider myself a liberal, but I never agreed with that. A hate crime is a thought crime. It’s a thought crime, and I don’t think we should go down that slope. A crime is a crime. If you kill somebody, you should be punished for it. The law should not be involved in what is in your mind.”

GREEN: “I hadn’t really thought about it that way, but that’s a fair point.”
