Andrej Karpathy believes the gap between public perception of AI and its real capabilities has widened dramatically over the past six months.
Around 6 billion people have barely used LLMs, while another 1β2 billion mainly treat free chatbots as improved search engines. Meanwhile, roughly 20 million developers and mathematicians are already using frontier models to complete projects in days that once took far longer.
But inside AI labs, a much smaller group of around 5,000 people is seeing something even more extreme: thousands of AI agents working for weeks to find software vulnerabilities and explore scientific and mathematical problems faster than humans can verify the results.
Karpathy attributes this divide to task complexity, uneven model capabilities, and access. Simple questions reveal little of what AI can do on large, complex tasks. Models perform particularly well on digital problems with verifiable outcomes, where reinforcement learning can optimize their performance.
The result is a strange reality, most people see chatbots that still make obvious mistakes, while a tiny group watches AI capabilities accelerate at a pace that is becoming difficult to comprehend.
Both worlds exist simultaneously but the gap between them keeps growing.

βThe smartest thing was the unaided AI.β
βI think something like that is an interesting framework for superintelligence.β

These are the words of Fields Medalist, Hugo Duminil-Copin, who was working on 16 problems OpenAI now claims it has solved.
And he says some mathematicians may now keep their research problems to themselves rather than share them publicly. AI might actually make mathematics less open.

Muse wonder brings Meta back to the frontier of AI
They just released Muse Wonder, whose top version beats Claude Opus 5.5 on 8 of 14 published benchmarks.
A rally major milestone for Zuckerberg
Its ahead of GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1 on long-running coding, legal work and business automation.
The widest gap comes on SWE-Marathon, an ultra-long engineering test, where Full scores 57.5 against 46.3 for Opus 5.5.
Full also leads DeepSWE 1.1, a long-horizon coding test, 79.0 to 74.2, in what Meta says were independent third-party runs.
On Harveyβs legal agent benchmark, which credits only tasks finished in full without hallucination, Full scores 13.1, more than triple Opus 5.5βs 4.2.

Mechanistic interpretability is giving researchers a closer look at what happens inside large language models and how they develop internal representations that go beyond simple word associations.
Studies have found that models can develop internal features representing concepts, track relationships between facts, and sometimes discover general rules that let them solve problems they havenβt seen before.
One intriguing phenomenon is called βgrokkingβ: during training, a model can suddenly shift from memorizing examples to generalizing from underlying patterns. In some experiments, performance on new problems improves dramatically even after a long period of apparent failure.
This suggests that neural networks can discover compact rules from data without anyone explicitly programming those rules into them.
These findings donβt prove that AI understands reality the same way humans do, or that models simply erase memorized facts and replace them with a complete world model.

"In 2 years' time, if your job is on the other side of a screen, you will be the dumbest person on the team that drags down everyone else because all your colleagues will be AIs. And so the value of your cognitive labor is negative. They would pay you not to be a part of the team. As of this week, we are no longer the smartest things on this planet. "

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has argued that AI could dramatically accelerate biology, potentially compressing a century of scientific progress into just 5β10 years.
The longevity race is already attracting major tech fortunes. Jeff Bezos has backed Altos Labs, Sam Altman is involved with Retro Biosciences, and Peter Thiel is associated with NewLimit. Their shared ambition is to understand aging and develop ways to extend healthy human life.
Some of this research is moving beyond the laboratory. Retro Biosciences, for example, is pursuing therapies aimed at improving cellular health, while scientists are exploring ways to reverse aspects of cellular aging. But these approaches remain experimental, and doubling human lifespan is far from a proven outcome.
The bigger possibility is that AI could accelerate drug discovery, uncover mechanisms of aging and help researchers develop treatments that would otherwise take decades to discover.
That makes the next decade particularly interesting for longevity science. We donβt know when major breakthroughs will arrive, or whether they will deliver the results people hope for.
Until then, protecting your health today may be the most practical way to give yourself the opportunity to benefit from tomorrowβs medicine.
