Enough honor for you is that you are a slave of Allah and enough pride for you is that Allah is your Lord.

Giving Charity on Fridays

● Ka'b al-Ahbar (rahimahullah) said:

The sun has neither risen nor set on a day greater than the day of Friday,

and charity given on it is greater than on other days.

[Sahih Musannaf of 'Abd Ar-Razzaq (rahimahullah), 5558]

● al-A‘mash narrated from Mujahid, from ‘Abdullah ibn Damrah,

from Ka‘b (rahimahumullah) who said:

Charity is multiplied on Friday.

[Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah, 2/57, no. 6, Maktabah Islamiyyah]

● Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullah) said:

Giving charity on Friday has a special merit compared to other days,

just as giving charity during the month of Ramadan has a higher merit compared to the rest of the year.

I witnessed Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah)

when he would go out for Jumuaah,

he would take whatever he found at home—be it bread or anything else—and give it as charity in secret on his way.

I heard him say:

“If Allah commanded us to give charity before consulting with the Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) (58:12),

then giving charity before consulting with Allah is even more virtuous and deserving of merit.”

[Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullah), Zaad al-Maad, 1/399]

● Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullah) said:

If the one giving charity

knew

that his charity landed in the Hand of Allah,

before the hand of the poor person,

the pleasure of the giver would be greater than the pleasure of the receiver.

[Ibn ul-Qayyim (rahimahullah), paraphrased from al-Wabil al-Sayyib, al-Madarij as-Salikeen, 1/26]

Abu Huraira (radiyAllahu ‘anhu) reported Allah's Messenger (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) as saying:

No one gives sadaqah (charity) of a date out of his honest earning, except that Allah accepts it with His Right Hand, and then fosters it as one of you fosters the colt or a young she-camel, till it becomes like a mountain or even greater.

[Sahih Muslim, 1014b, Book 12, Hadith 80]

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said:

“Charity (sadaqah) reaches (lit. falls into) the Hand of Allah before it falls into the hand of the one who asks for it.” (i.e., Allah Ta’ala accepts it), he (radiyAllahu ‘anhu) then recited the Verse:

{(Do they not know that Allah) accepts repentance from His servants and takes their charities”}
— Surah Tawbah, 9:104

[Tafsir at-Tabari (rahimahullah); Jami’ul Bayan, Surah Tawbah, Verse: 104, vol. 11, pg. 666, see also: Majma az-Zawaid, vol. 3, pg. 111, Hadith: 4677]

Abu Hurairah (radiyAllahu ‘anhu) narrated that :

the Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Indeed Allah accepts charity, and He accepts it with His Right (Hand) to nurture it for one of you, just like one of you would nurture his foal, until the bite (of food) becomes as large as Uhud."

[Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 662, Chapter 28: What Has Been Related About the Virtue of Charity, Graded: Hasan Sahih]

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyAllahu ‘anhu):

"Indeed, charity* (sadaqah) reaches (lit. falls into) the Hand of Allah before it reaches the hand of the one who asks,"

then he recited:

{And He it is Who accepts repentance* from His servants}
— ash-Shura: 25, the verse.

Allah says in surah al-Nisa':

[وَاسْأَلُوا اللَّهَ مِن فَضْلِهِ]

And ask Allah out of His bounty. (32)

In part of his commentary, al-Baghawi (rahimahullah) wrote:

[قال سفيان بن عيينة : لم يأمر بالمسألة إلا ليعطي]

Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah (rahimahullah) said, “Allah only orders you to ask so that He may give.”

[Tafsir al-Baghawi 2/206]

Umar ibn al-Khattab (radiyAllahu ‘anhu) said:

I am not concerned about my Du’a’ being answered, but the concern is the Du’a’ itself (ability to make it/say it), because if I am inspired to make Dua, then the response will (certainly) come with it.

When the companion Ubai Ibn Ka’ab  (radiyAllahu ’anh) asked the Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu‘alayhi wa ālihi wa sallam) what would happen if he dedicated all of his supplications towards sending blessings on the Prophet Muhammad (sallAllahu‘alayhi wa ālihi wa sallam)

The Prophet (sallAllahu‘alayhi wa ālihi wa sallam) replied

“Your needs will be satisfied and your sins will be forgiven”.

Ubai bin Ka’ab (radiyAllahu ‘anh), who said;

“I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah,
I supplicate often,
so how much of my supplication should I devote to you?”

He (sallAllahu‘alayhi wa ālihi wa sallam) replied, ‘as you desire’.

I said, ‘a quarter of it?’

He (sallAllahu‘alayhi wa ālihi wa sallam) said ‘as you desire, but if you were to increase upon this, it would be better for you.’

I said, ‘half of it?’

He (sallAllahu‘alayhi wa ālihi wa sallam) said, ‘as you desire, but if you were to increase upon this, it would be better for you.’

I said, ‘two-thirds of it?’

He (sallAllahu‘alayhi wa ālihi wa sallam) said again, ‘as you desire, but if you were to increase upon this, it would be better for you.’

Finally I said, ‘and if I dedicate my supplication in its entirety to you?’

He (sallAllahu‘alayhi wa ālihi wa sallam), ‘then your needs will be satisfied, and your sins forgiven.’

but the best remembrance of Allah is

when one remembers Allah when he is doing a sin, so he leaves it.

“Aaishah (radiyAllahu ‘anha) would give 70,000 coins in charity while her own clothes were covered in patches.”

[al-Zuhd wal-Raqa’iq, 754]

Abdullah Ibn Zubayr (radiyAllahu ‘anhu) said:

"I have never seen two women more generous than Aaishah and (her sister) Asmaa (radiyAllahu ‘anhouma).

Their generosity was different; Aaishah would gather things and after they had been collected together, she would share them out; Asma would not keep anything for the next day.”

Do You Love Allah?

Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullah) stated:

How amazing it is for the one who claims to love, but he is in need of one to remind him of his Beloved One.

He doesn't remember his Beloved One except when one reminds him.

The least of that which is in love, is love doesn't cause you to forget to remember the One you (claim) to love!

‘Umar Ibn al-Khattāb (raḍiyAllāhu ‘anhu) said:

(But know that) you can never pay back someone who disobeys Allāh in his dealings with you with anything better than obeying Allāh in your dealings with him.

[Abu Dawud, Kitaab az-Zuhd, article 89]
Abu Hurairah (radiyAllahu ‘anhu) said:

There came a man to the Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and said,

"O Messenger of Allah, which charity is the most rewardable?"

He (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, "That you should give charity (in a state when you are) healthy and stingy and fear poverty, hoping to become rich (charity in such a state of health and mind is the best). And you must not defer (charity to such a length) that you are about to die and would be saying: 'This is for so-and-so, and this for so-and-so.' Lo! It has already come into (the possession of) so-and- so".

[al-Bukhari and Muslim; Riyadh as-Salihin, 90]
Hasan al-Basri (rahimahullah) said:

Indeed from the charity is that you hear something of Fiqh (understanding of religion), then narrate it to others.

[al-Faqeeh wal Mutafaqqih, Khateeb al-Baghdadi (rahimahullah), 144]
It is upon the Muslim woman who desires what is with Allah to guard her tongue from:

• backbiting,
• tale carrying,
• “he said, she said,” (he’s like this, she’s like this, they did this, so-and-so did that),
• asking too many questions,
• and ingratitude.

Most of the gatherings of the women are spent engaging in these matters. It is like their salt on food — the gathering is not sweet without it.

[A Message Exclusively to the Muslim Woman by Shaykh Jamal al-Harithi (hafidhahullah), pg. 33]
Ibn Asaakir (rahimahullah) said:

Know O my brother! May Allaah grant us and you His pleasure and make us from those who have awe of Him and fear of Him as He should be feared. Indeed, the flesh of the scholars is poisonous, and Allaah’s way of disclosing the hidden affairs of those who diminish their (the scholars’) worth is well known.

Abu Hurairah (radiyAllahu ‘anhu) reported:

The Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, "The upper hand is better than the lower one (i.e., the spending hand is better than the receiving hand); and begin (charity) with those who are under your care; and the best charity is that which given out of surplus; and he who asks (Allah) to help him abstain from the unlawful and the forbidden, Allah will fulfill his wish; and he who seeks self-sufficiency will be made self-sufficient by Allah".

It is (considered) bad manners (adab)

in sittings with others (i.e., sittings in our time applies to all gatherings, meetings, conversations, online or offline)

- to interrupt your companion while he is talking,
- or to interrupt him before he finishes what he started to say.

Rather, you should listen to him as if you had never heard anything (of it before) except from him (whether it be of advice, reminders, or any good talk)).

[Ibn Abd al-Barr (rahimahullah), Bahjat al-Majalis, pg. 19]
'Uqbah bin al-Harith (radiyAllahu ‘anhu) said:

Once I performed the 'Asr prayer in al-Madinah behind the Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

He (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) got up quickly after finishing the prayer with Taslim, and stepping over the people, went to one of the rooms of his wives.

The people were startled at his haste, and when he came out and saw their astonishment at his urgency he said, "I recalled that there was left with me some gold which was meant for charity; I did not like to keep it any longer, so I gave orders that it should be distributed".

[al-Bukhari].

In another narration, Messenger of Allah said, "I had left some gold for Sadaqah in the house, and did not wish to keep it overnight".

Anas bin Malik (radiyAllahu ‘anhu) reported: After the death of Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), Abu Bakr said to 'Umar (radiyAllahu ‘anhuma) "Let us visit Umm Aiman (radiyAllahu ‘anha) as Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) used to visit her." As we came to her, she wept. They (Abu Bakr and 'Umar) said to her, "What makes you weep? Do you not know that what Allah has in store for His Messenger (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) is better than (this worldly life)?" She said, "I weep not because I am ignorant of the fact that what is in store for Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) (in the Hereafter) is better than this world, but I weep because the Revelation has ceased to come." This reply moved both of them to tears and they began to weep along with her.
