Die Spanier nannten Mexiko New Spain. Cortez, ein Diplomat und Stratege, bewegte sich in Richtung seiner Hauptstadt - der Stadt Tenochtitlan - und griff auf eine für andere berühmte Konquistadoren untypische Technik zurück. Er schickte seine Botschafter zum Kasi-kam, um die Erlaubnis für seine Abteilung zu erhalten, durch ihre Gebiete zu marschieren. Nicht alle Anführer erlaubten dies, und als die Spanier ihre Weigerung ignorierten, verteidigten sie mutig ihr Land. Doch die Zersplitterung der Indianer, die Wirkung von Schusswaffen und die wahre Sensation der Pferde gaben den Ausschlag zugunsten der Eindringlinge.

Zum erfolgreichen Vormarsch des Heeres von Cortes - und nach dem Nachschub durch die Eingeborenen war es schon ein richtiges Heer - trug auch die Legende des großen Quetzalcoatl entscheidend bei. Diese Legende besagt, dass er im 10. Jahrhundert an der Spitze der Weißen an den Ufern des Panuko-Flusses ankam. Mehrere Jahre lang lehrte Quetzalcoatl die Indianer neue Handwerke, Bodenbearbeitung und inspirierte als Weißer die Liebe zu seinesgleichen. Es ist immer noch schwierig, in dieser Legende die Wahrheit von der Fiktion zu trennen, aber die Folklore vieler Stämme Südamerikas bewahrte Legenden über das Kommen der Weißen und vergötterte sie. Natürlich sollten nicht alle Konquistadoren mit dem gleichen Maßstab angegangen werden. Nur die Araucan-Stämme, die auf dem Territorium Chiles lebten, kämpften mehr als drei Jahrhunderte lang gegen ausländische Invasionen und wurden erst Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts unterworfen. Nach Ansicht des Autors erklärt sich dies paradoxerweise aus der sozioökonomischen Rückständigkeit der Araukaner im Vergleich zu den entwickelten Zivilisationen der Maya, Azteken, Inkas, Chibcha-Muisca. Atahualpe kam heraus, um den Priester Vincente Valverde mit einem Kreuz und einer Bibel in seinen Händen zu treffen.
