Trump "grateful" for SCOTUS ruling allowing WH ballroom construction to continue
...Shortly after the decision was handed down, the president took to Truth Social to share his thoughts. "We are grateful for the Decision of the United States Supreme Court. The Military/Ballroom Complex being built on the hallowed grounds of the White House, which is so vital for National Security, will be THE GREATEST OF ITS KIND! It is something that Presidents have wanted for 150 years, and that the Military has been seeking for the last 100 years. Their wish will soon be fulfilled! Construction is under budget and ahead of schedule..."
Well shit, I'm so happy! I mean, it just makes me feel so good about everything that's happening with my country. As long as Trumpstein gets to build the ballroom, I'm fine with everything.

Israeli army says Netanyahu seeks to "escalate" regional wars to delay elections
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeks to escalate the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and initiate new wars in West Asia to "disrupt or delay" upcoming Knesset elections, Israeli army officials told Maariv on 22 August.
The unnamed officials warned that Netanyahu does not want military operations in Gaza to end and could escalate attacks on Palestinians for political reasons as elections approach. "We will not enter a new and unnecessary war," the officials said.
Military officials say the army, which relies heavily on reservists, is short on manpower needed to illegally occupy territory in "security zones" in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and the West Bank...

Qatar slashes govt budget by 30 percent as LNG income collapses
Qatar has cut government department budgets by up to 30 percent and reduced overseas aid spending by roughly 85 percent, the Financial Times (FT) reported on 22 August, adding that Doha is "contemplating" further cuts to deal with the fallout of the US Israeli war on Iran.
Qatar's revenue primarily depends on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Iranian retaliatory attacks have disrupted that production, complicating the export of the remaining supply through the Strait of Hormuz.
The budget cuts follow the collapse in LNG income, three people briefed on the matter told FT. Doha has set its 2026 budget at roughly $61 billion, but has not disclosed how much the departmental cuts reduce it. Of the six Gulf states, Qatar faces the steepest downturn in 2026: an 8.6 percent decline in output, according to IMF projections...

US-Canada trade deal collapses just before 50% tariff deadline
...Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Friday that he had withdrawn the Canadian negotiating team from talks with the US shortly before the midnight deadline.
"In recent weeks, we made important progress toward improving Canada's position as having the best deal in the world with the US," Carney said in a statement. The US can't keep plugging holes to stop the ship from sinking. Part 1
In the past month, the US Federal Reserve and the US Treasury have been running around attempting to plug holes in a sinking ship. At the end of July, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on behalf of the US Treasury along with Japan’s Ministry of Finance intervened to stop the Yen from continuing to fall in value. The war in Iran along with other inflationary pressures has put a lot of pressure on the yen, potentially forcing Japan to do something to stop the slide, mainly selling US Treasuries (American debt) to buy yen, which would cause interest rates in the USA to rise, as the cost of paying someone to hold our debt would have to go up in response to the market being flooded with bonds. For those who don’t know, when bonds lose value (when people sell them on the market) the rate paid to get buyers to purchase and hold the bonds goes up (the interest rate).
Long story short, the US needed to take action to give the Japanese a way out of this mess, and the plan was this: Japan traded $85 billion in Euros instead, and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York itself sold $5 to $10 billion in Euros to buy yen. This was done without consulting Europe… Henry Kissinger once said, “It may be dangerous to be America’s enemy, but to be America’s friend is fatal.”
Additionally, to give the Japanese another alternative to selling US Treasuries to purchase yen, the US promoted the use of the Fed’s FIMA Repo Facility, which allowed Japan to temporarily borrow dollars using US Treasuries as collateral, which they could then use to buy their own currency. However, the fundamental situation didn’t change, and after the Yen recovered from 163 to 155 to the dollar, it quickly returned to 159 to the dollar. As long as inflationary pressure persists in Japan due to the war in Iran (Japan imports 90% of their energy resources).
More pertinent to the direct problems of the USA, Scott Bessent also decided to double the buyback program of long-term US government debt. Starting in September, the maximum amount that the government will spend to buy back older, illiquid 10 to 30 year bonds will jump from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation. By creating buying pressure, they hope to reduce long term interest rates in the USA. Like the operation to support the Yen above, this also led to a short-term positive move in the market that also quickly failed, and interest rates have continued to rise.

The US can't keep plugging holes to stop the ship from sinking. Part 2
Some argue that none of this is as big of a problem as many are making it out to be. These individuals argue that interest rates are still low by historical terms, and that government debt is still largely locked in at earlier, lower interest rates. I will examine both of these claims.
Firstly, interest rates are indeed still low by historical standards, but the economy has radically changed over the last 30 to 40 years. A combination of low inflation and low interest rates (near 0% for the majority of the past 20 years) has created a new economy built on a mountain of debt. Homes have gone from being 3 to 4 times median incomes to 4 to 5 to 7 times median incomes over the past 4 decades, while US debt has exploded to $40 trillion dollars. So, a 5% interest rate is a lot more painful than it was for our parents or grandparents. As for the “lock in” on low interest rates on previously borrowed government debt, 30 to 40% of government debt matures every 12 to 18 months. Meaning, those earlier loans reach their maturity date, and then they have to be paid off with borrowing at current rates. Basically, those 10 year loans reach their final year, and the US government isn’t actually paying off any debt, as they are buying more.
So yes, this wouldn’t be a problem if we were borrowing less over time, and the economy was growing faster than the debt, but the opposite has occurred. The national debt was 55% of GDP in the year 2000, and it is 125% of GDP now. Deficits spending averaged 2% of GDP in the 1990s and 2000’s, but rose to nearly 5% in the 2010s, and has averaged 8.5% of GDP so far in the 2020s. By the 2030s, any low interest rate debt on the US government’s account will have expired, and we will be left with only higher interest rate debt. With inflation rising, debt rising, and deficits continuing to expand, things are only moving in the wrong direction.
What is the way out of all of this? Well, firstly, we would need the world to suddenly become a lot more stable. Setting that aside, there are only a few possible ways to escape from the kind of perpetual debt cycle the US has locked itself into:
1. Lower spending.
2. Increase taxes.
3. Inflate the debt away.
4. Massively increase productivity.
Since cutting spending or increasing taxes are political non-starters in the USA, and a massive increase in productivity is a pipe-dream, outside of the realm of AI evangelists, the most likely scenario will be the money printer. This, however, makes investors even more cautious about holding American debt. After all, would you want to lend money only to be paid back in less valuable money? Of course not, and this is the crux of why bond investors are going to demand higher interest rates for holding US bonds going forward.

Japan and the US just spent billions to try to save the yen. Why is it already losing ground?
Washington and Tokyo's unprecedented step to bolster the yen already appears to be unraveling.
On July 30, Japan's finance ministry reportedly sold as much as $59 billion to buy the Japanese currency, then at 40 year lows. Tokyo and Washington later confirmed they had acted together to bolster a weak yen. It was the first time they did so since 1998, and both US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Japan's Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama pledged to do it again if needed.
The yen began the year at 156 to the dollar, before steadily weakening to 163 by late July. Post intervention, the yen strengthened to 157 to the dollar, only to fall back to 159 by August 11, meaning the yen has already lost half of its post intervention gains...

I'll say the same thing I said in response to Alexander Mercouris when he started celebrating the ICC's decision against Israel. A court's decision is only as relevant as its ability to enforce it. A court can order or "recommend" whatever it wants, but if it can't enforce the decision, the decision is meaningless.
I was told I didn't know what I was talking about and Alex is a lawyer "so he knows better than you" blah blah blah. Okay bro. While I'm not a lawyer, I wasn't born yesterday. There was no need to be a lawyer to predict the outcome. I'm not picking on Alexander, by the way. I'm just addressing the reaction I got from my audience back then.
The UN is nothing more than an extension of America's foreign policy and has been this way for a long time. Sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly, but it's about as meaningless as the ICC's decisions.
