Turkish parliament approves first article of Mecca defense pact
Turkiye's parliament approved the first article of a bill on 4 November ratifying the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement after closing debate on the full text and turning to an article by article vote.
Faik Oztrak, parliamentary group chair of the Republican People's Party (CHP), voiced his party's support for the pact, telling the chamber that the deal gives Turkiye an opening to build a new regional security structure outside NATO, with Ankara at its center.
"This agreement is particularly significant in that it opens up a new autonomous space in the east west balance," Oztrak said, adding that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has declared Tehran ready to join.
