The MG 42 and the Engineer Who Had Never Designed a Gun
For the first time, a weapon design was not simply entrusted to gunsmiths; instead, Werner Gruner from J. Grossfuss Metall und Lackierwarenfabrik in Döbeln, an expert in metal pressing and stamping, played a key role in the design.
Werner Gruner, the lead designer, used pressed sheet metal parts wherever possible in the assembly of the new machine gun and constructed a bolt action with a fully movable locking bolt, which enabled a high rate of fire and rapid barrel changes and the man-hours fell by half.
