The German Labour Front and the Reich Housing Office often in collaboration with the KdF they began the house building program in 1933 for newly married couples, the house cost 1000 Reichsmarks (payable in the future or free from the fourth child onwards).
The following aspects were central to this:

1. The ‘housing estate concept’ and the detached house
The ideal was to move away from the tenement-like cramped conditions of the major cities. Housing estates were promoted in which small, simple detached houses with gardens were situated. The garden was central to this: it served not only as a place for recreation (in line with the KdF philosophy of ‘Strength through Joy’), but was also intended to facilitate self-sufficiency, thereby making the nation less dependent on foreign countries.

2. ‘Heimatstil’ architecture
In contrast to the monumental administrative buildings, residential houses embraced the so-called ‘Heimatstil’. This meant:

- Steep gable roofs.
- The use of local materials (wood, stone).
- An appearance intended to seem down-to-earth and German, in deliberate contrast to the modern, shady architecture of the Bauhaus, which the National Socialists rejected because it is degenerate.

3. Social control through housing design
The design of the houses and housing estates also served the purpose of social control. The open layout and close proximity of dwellings within the estates were intended to encourage mutual social control amongst the residents. The home was not merely a private retreat, but a place of national education.

4. The role of women
The floor plans of these houses were strictly functional and tailored to the division of roles. The kitchen was designed as the woman’s central workplace, whilst the living areas were used for family time and education (e.g. via the radio / Volksempfänger, Reading, etc.).
