How much water can a camel store in its hump?

Camels do not store water in their humps. Instead, camels use the humps to store energy-rich fat deposits. Many animals, including humans, use body fat as an energy storage.

Unique to a camel, however, is the fact that it stores the fat in a hump up on top instead of around the belly or limbs. It does this to stay cool. Fat has a natural tendency to insulate heat, acting like a blanket to bodies that are covered in fat. Being a hot-climate animal, a camel would waste energy trying to cool down if its fat were wrapped around its body.

How do flies walk on the ceiling?

Flies can walk upside down! They can do this because of their sticky feet.

A fly has foot pads that are covered in tacky glue.

To unstick their feet so they can walk anywhere, the fly uses tiny foot claws to push or twist themselves away.

Why does evolution always lead to more advanced species?

Evolution does not always lead to more advanced species. Evolution is simply a description of the way change occurs in biological creatures over many generations in order to better exploit a certain environment.

Evolution sometimes leads to progress, but it sometimes leads in the opposite direction.

For instance, the Texas blind salamander has lost his eyes after many generations of evolution due to the uselessness of eyes in the dark caves where he dwells. As reported by biologist David M. Hillis, these salamanders have successfully adapted to their environment by loosing their eyes. But going blind does not seem to be much in the way of progress from a global perspective.

How do icebergs lose their salt?

Icebergs do not have any salt to begin with. Icebergs are not pieces of frozen ocean water. Rather, icebergs are frozen chunks of fresh water that began their life on land. It all starts when snow falls in a region of land that is too cold for the snow to melt.

Over time, the non-salty snow builds up on the ground. Without temperatures warm enough to melt the snow, it piles up so high that it starts to crush under its own weight. The crushing force of gravity fuses the non-salty snow crystals into a giant slab of non-salty ice known as a glacier. This process is very slow and takes a long time. Gravity not only pulls the snow down into the ice, it also pulls the ice downhill.

Why does a magnetic compass point to the Geographic North Pole?

A magnetic compass does not point to the geographic north pole. A magnetic compass points to the earth's magnetic poles, which are not the same as earth's geographic poles.

Furthermore, the magnetic pole near earth's geographic north pole is actually the south magnetic pole. When it comes to magnets, opposites attract. This fact means that the north end of a magnet in a compass is attracted to the south magnetic pole, which lies close to the geographic north pole.

Magnetic field lines outside of a permanent magnet always run from the north magnetic pole to the south magnetic pole. Therefore, the magnetic field lines of the earth run from the southern geographic hemisphere towards the northern geographic hemisphere.

Galaxies look stationary, so why do scientists say that they rotate?

Galaxies do indeed rotate. This rotation is what gives typical galaxies a flattened round shape, a bit like how throwing and spinning pizza dough makes it round and flat. In terms of the tangential speed of its parts, galaxies rotate at an incredibly high speed.

For instance, our entire solar system speeds along at about 500,000 miles per hour as it takes part in the galaxy's rotation.

So why do galaxies look so frozen in place if their parts are moving so quickly? It's because galaxies are unimaginably huge. An object traveling at high speed across a very long distance appears to be moving slowly when viewed from far away. This is not a psychological effect. The object is actually traveling very slowly when its speed is expressed in terms of the percentage of the total distance it has to travel.

What keeps the sun spinning?

Nothing keeps the sun spinning. The sun spins under its own inertia and does not need any help to keep it going. Isaac Newton observed that objects in motion tend to stay in motion. This is called the Law of Inertia. It means that if an object is already moving and nothing acts on it to stop it, the object will just keep moving under its own inertia.

For instance, a hockey puck sliding across the parking lot will only stop if it hits a wall or if there is enough friction acting on it to slow it down to a stop. Without an external force like friction, the puck will slide forever under its own inertia.

The Law of Inertia is just a conceptual statement. The more general and more mathematical version of the Law of Inertia is called the Law of Conservation of Momentum. It states that the total momentum of an object stays constant if nothing acts on the object.

An egg looks like a crazy jellyfish underwater

A cracked egg on land might make a big mess, but 18 metres (60 feet) below the surface of the ocean, the pressure on the egg is 2.8 times atmospheric pressure, and it holds it all together like an invisible egg shell.

This is how a Face forms in the Womb

Embryonic development is an incredibly complex process that scientists are still just beginning to understand. But one thing researchers have been able to map out is how the embryo folds to create the structures of the human face in the womb.

There is enough DNA in the average person’s body to stretch from the sun to Pluto and back — 17 times

The human genome (the genetic code in each human cell) contains 23 DNA molecules (called chromosomes), each containing from 500,000 to 2.5 million nucleotide pairs. DNA molecules of this size are 1.7 to 8.5 cm long when uncoiled — about 5 cm on average.

There are about 37 trillion cells in the human body, so if you were to uncoil all of the DNA encased in each cell and place the molecules end to end, it would sum to a total length of 2×1014 meters — enough for 17 Pluto round-trips (the distance from the sun to Pluto and then back again is 1.2×1013 meters).

As an added bonus, you should know that we each share 99% of our DNA with every other human — just to show that we’re far more alike than different.

Multi-colored holes?

Black holes aren’t black. They’re very dark, sure, but they aren’t black. They glow, slightly, giving off light across the whole spectrum, including visible light. This radiation is called “Hawking radiation” after the former Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University Stephen Hawking, who first proposed its existence.

Because black holes are constantly giving off this radiation, and therefore losing mass, they will eventually evaporate if they don’t have another source of mass to sustain them.

Why are veins blue?

The veins themselves are not blue, but are mostly colorless. It is the blood in the veins that gives them color. Furthermore, the blood in human veins is also not blue. Blood is always red. Blood that has been oxygenated (mostly flowing through the arteries) is bright red and blood that has lost its oxygen (mostly flowing through the veins) is dark red.

Anyone who has donated blood or had their blood drawn by a nurse can attest that deoxygenated blood is dark red and not blue.

The blood in your veins appears blue because you are looking at your veins through layers of skin and fat. Skin scatters a lot of the red portion of white light before it can reflect off the blood, leaving the blue light to reflect off the blood and back to our eyes.

How can we unlock the 90% of our brain that we never use?

Healthy humans use all of their brain. There is no part of the brain that goes unused. Certain tasks work certain parts of the brain more, but they all play important roles.

Brain maps, as found in modern anatomy books, indicate that each part of the brain has a specific function essential to a healthy human. If there were a part of your brain that really went unused, then you could safely damage that part in an accident with no ill effects. But decades of medical records show that damage to any part of the brain has severe effects. If 90% of the brain were not used, then 90% of the brain tumors would cause no problem.

This myth was propagated by authors trying to sell books on mystical ways to unlock your hidden potential, claiming that unused brain power could be tapped using the methods in their books.

Why do mirrors flip left to right and not up to down?

Mirrors do not flip left to right. They flip front to back. Mirrors reflect light rays such that the angle of reflection equals the angle of incidence.

For a three-dimensional object standing in front of the mirror, there is an image of the object created behind the mirror with the right side still on the right, the left side still on the left, the top side still on the top, the bottom side still on the bottom, but the front side is flipped to the back and the back side is flipped to the front.

This can be easily seen by tracing the rays from significant points on the object and seeing where they end up in the mirror image.

When do the planets in our solar system all line up?

The planets in our solar system never line up in one perfectly straight line like they show in the movies.

If you look at a two-dimensional plot of the planets and their orbits on a piece of paper you may be lead to believe that all the planets will circle around to the same line eventually. In reality, the planets do not all orbit perfectly in the same plane. Instead, they swing about on different orbits in three dimensional space. For this reason, they will never be perfectly aligned. It's like waiting for a swarm of flies circling your head to all line up. It is not going to happen.

When astronomers use words like "planetary alignment", they don't mean a literal lining up. They just mean that some of the planets are in the same general region of the sky.

What is the universe made of?

Astronomers face an embarrassing conundrum: they don’t know what 95% of the universe is made of. Atoms, which form everything we see around us, only account for a measly 5%.

Over the past 80 years it has become clear that the substantial remainder is comprised of two shadowy entities – dark matter and dark energy. The former, first discovered in 1933, acts as an invisible glue, binding galaxies and galaxy clusters together. Unveiled in 1998, the latter is pushing the universe’s expansion to ever greater speeds.

Astronomers are closing in on the true identities of these unseen interlopers.

Polar bears are nearly undetectable by infrared cameras

Thermal cameras detect the heat lost by a subject as infrared, but polar bears are experts at conserving heat. The bears keep warm due to a thick layer of blubber under the skin. Add to this a dense fur coat and they can endure the chilliest Arctic day.

How do projectors project the color black?

Projectors do not project the color black. This makes sense since black is really the absence of light, and you can't project something that does not exist.

When a projector sends a beam of light on to a wall or a projector screen so that an image is formed on the wall or screen, the parts of the image that look black are really a very dim white color (which we sometimes call gray).

The projector sends some light to all parts of the image, including the parts that we perceive as black. Some white light is indeed beamed to the parts of the image that are supposed to be black, but the light is typically dim enough in these regions that they look black to our eyes when surrounded by areas of the image that are receiving much more light and therefore are much brighter.

How did the Madagascar hissing cockroach got its name?

Well, it hisses, of course. But how it hisses is a little weird. The giant insect forces gas through tiny breathing pores called spiracles on its thorax and abdomen. The cockroaches hiss when surprised, when challenging other cockroaches to a fight and when trying to attract mates.

What are the environmental concerns that arises when we talk about space tourism?

Space tourism is a new term for us. But the race has already been started. Recently commercial space tourism race was started by Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson and Ex-CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos.

Basically their demonstration was to offer the people to reach outer space, feel zero gravity and take a glimpse of Earth from space.

But you might have known a rocket emits 100 times more carbon dioxide for a passenger than a flight. So, if this space tourism race started then imagine the amount of green house gas this industry will emit!
