How much time it takes for a photon to get from the core to the surface of the Sun?

It takes a photon up to 40,000 years to travel from the core of the sun to its surface, but only 8 minutes to travel the rest of the way to Earth.

A photon travels, on average, a particular distance before being briefly absorbed and released by an atom, which scatters it in a new random direction. To travel from the sun’s core to the sun’s surface (696,000 kilometers) so it can escape into space, a photon needs to make a huge number of drunken jumps.

Plants can detect insect attacks by 'sniffing' each other's aromas

Fragrant aromas from plants can actually be a response to attacks by insects, and can alert neighbours to an attack or summon the insects’ predators. Now, scientists are deciphering these secret codes to develop better, greener chemicals to defend crops against herbivorous insects.

Plants have nowhere to run from their enemies - flying, crawling and jumping insects want to eat them alive. But plants are not defenceless. They deploy chemical toxins to deter insects. These can make the plant taste bitter, inhibit the herbivore’s digestive enzymes, disrupt their metabolism or poison them.

Why does the sun lighten our hair and darken our skin?

Melanin is a pigment found in your skin and hair cells that gives each its color. It does seem weird that the sun bleaches our hair and darkens our skin. This mostly has to do with hair being dead and skin being alive. The sun bleaches and destroys the melanin in your hair giving you lighter hair.

Why do boys voices change at puberty?

It's the larynx (or voice box) that's causing all that noise. As the body goes through puberty, the larynx grows larger and thicker.

It happens in both boys and girls, but the change is more evident in boys. Girls' voices only deepen by a couple of tones and the change is barely noticeable.

Do insects have lungs?

Instead of lungs, insects breathe with a network of tiny tubes called tracheae. Air enters the tubes through a row of holes along an insect's abdomen. The air then diffuses down the blind-ended tracheae. Since the biggest bugs have the longest tracheae, they should need the most oxygen to be able to breathe.

Fish need oxygen too, but since they don t have lungs, they take oxygen from the water in which they live. The oxygen in the water available to fish is called dissolved oxygen (oxygen that is dissolved in the water). Fish use gills to take oxygen from water just as we use our lungs to take oxygen from the air.

Do sharks take care of their young?

Baby sharks are called pups. Just like there are many types of sharks, there are also different ways that sharks come into this world.

There are three ways that sharks are born:
• eggs are laid (like birds)
• eggs hatch inside the mother and then are born
• pups sharks grow inside the mother (like humans)

Sharks can have from 1 to 100 babies at a time, depending on the type of shark. The ones with pups that grow inside the mother have fewer babies at a time than sharks that lay eggs outside the body.

Sharks do not care for their babies after they are born, but they do search for a safe place where they can lay their eggs or give birth.
