Funding for Grad School in 2027: important information❗️

Doctoral admissions at leading U.S. research universities fell 15% for fall 2026, and that follows an 11% drop the year before.
The reason is funding unpredictability. A U.S. PhD offer isn't a scholarship — it's a five-year commitment to stipend, tuition, and insurance, funded largely by federal research grants. When those flows become unpredictable, departments admit fewer people.
A similar situation is happening with funded master's programs, which are decreasing every year.

📌Great scholarships that are still here:

🔹Knight-Hennessy (Stanford) — 6 Oct 2026. Stanford program application due 1 Dec.
🔹Chevening (UK) — 6 Oct 2026, opens August. Unconditional UK offer due 8 July 2027.
🔹Gates Cambridge — opens Sept 2026; international round closes Dec 2026 or Jan 2027 by course.
🔹Erasmus Mundus — no central application. Apply directly on each program's website, most closing Oct 2026–Feb 2027.
🔹Also great programs worth your attention: Swiss Government Excellence, ETH Zurich ESOP, McCall MacBain, DAAD, Bolashak.

The main message here is not to demotivate you. Please apply — but be strategic, think about different scenarios, and be prepared. Three things I'd do differently:
🔸Ask programs directly about funding. If funding is important for you, ask directly about it. That answer should reshape your list.
🔸Build across regions. A list of all US universities is a bit fragile.
🔸Apply for external funding even when the program says it funds you.
Fewer seats, more applicants. It doesn't mean that you shouldn't apply, instead it means: apply earlier, apply wider, and treat funding as a strategy rather than an afterthought.

The people who will do well in the 2027 cycle are the ones who started building in the summer of 2026.
