1. The Sunnis

After the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) died, there were differences of opinion about how the Muslims should be led and who should be given the leadership and authority. The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) agreed that only the Qur’ān and Sunnah had the authority to tell the people what to do. They decided, after looking into the Sunnah that Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq (may Allah be pleased with him) should be their leader – and that he would rule over them in accordance to the Qur’an and Sunnah. So he was the first Caliph. The second Caliph, ʿUmar Ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) was appointed by Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). The third Caliph, ʿUthman Ibn ʿAffān (may Allah be pleased with him) was chosen by a committee of six of the major Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who were themselves appointed by ʿUmar (radiyallāhu ʿanhu) before he passed away. The fourth Caliph, ʿAli Ibn Abi Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him) was appointed by the major Companions after the assassination of ʿUthmān. ʿAli gave (radiyallāhu ʿanhu) his pledge of allegiance to the previous three Caliphs and supported them wholeheartedly. He even named his children after them.

There are 73 sects amongst the Muslims according to several authentic ahādeeth – only one is recognized as being correct.

And they are the ones who follow the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all).

That sect is referred to as Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamā’ah (The People of Sunnah and the Main Body of the Companions), or Ahlul-Hadeeth (The People of Hadeeth) or the Salafis (The Followers of the Pious Predecessors) – all these names are synonymous with each other.

There is much dispute amongst the Muslims as to who are truly the right sect. Sunnis (or Salafis) are those who follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Path of the Sahābah (radiyallāhu ʿanhum) – so, whoever does that correctly are the People of the Saved Sect.
The Caliphs were not lawmakers rather they derived judgements from the revealed texts; they were leaders who ruled by the Qur’an and Sunnah. The application of the Laws (Shareeʿah) was worked out by the Companions and jurists after them based upon their research into the Qur’an and Sunnah – much of the Law they agreed upon, and some they differed over based upon their understanding of the Qur’an and Sunnah, but all-in-all the principles and fundamentals were one and the same.

Ahlus-Sunnah (i.e. the Sunnis) are very meticulous in acting upon the authentic hadeeth to the exclusion of the inauthentic hadeeth. They keep away from innovated practices that are not based upon the Qur’ān and Sunnah.

The Door Of Goodness


Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [رحمه الله] said:

«شهادةُ التوحيدِ تفتح بابَ الخير، والاستغفارُ يغلقُ بابَ الشر»

❝When the heart exalts its Lord, it submits to Him, yields to His judgment, fulfils His command, and humbles itself before Him, Glorified and Exalted is He.
And the source of all types of deviation, diverse falsehoods, and misguidance among people is weakness of one’s exaltation of Allah or its absence in the hearts.❞

[4] Exalt Allah and His Shariah First and Foremost

When hearts exalt Allah, the souls would exalt Allah’s Shariah. Allah’s sanctities are exalted, and the state of affairs of the people is set right:

ذَٰلِكَ وَمَن يُعَظِّمْ شَعَٰٓئِرَ ٱللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِن تَقْوَى ٱلْقُلُوبِ

Thus, what has been mentioned in the previous verses [Surah Hajj (27, 28, 29, 30, 31)] is an obligation that mankind owes to Allah. And whosoever honours the Symbols of Allah, then it is truly from the piety of the heart. [Al-Hajj 32]

Exalting Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is a branch of knowledge and awareness of Allah, Glorified and Most High. The greater knowledge a servant (of Allah) has regarding Allah, the greater the exaltation, veneration, and fear of Allah, and the greater his fulfilment of that fear.

The Light Of Īmān | Faith

From the affairs that cause happiness is the light that Allāh places in the heart of the servant, which is the light of Īmān (Faith). Indeed, this brings happiness to the breast and expands it, and it brings joy to the heart.

If this light is lost from the servant's heart, then it is miserable and annoyed and it ends up in the most distressful and difficult of prisons.

PATIENCE

Be patient with the calamities that befall you, while having faith that these calamities only happen by the decree of Allāh ﷻ, and due to the sins of mankind. As Allāh, the Exalted, said:

وَمَآ أَصَٰبَكُم مِّن مُّصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَيَعْفُوا۟ عَن كَثِيرٍ {٣٠}

And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much.* 

Included in belief in Allāh ﷻ is patience upon the decree of Allāh.

Patience is of three types:

patience upon the obedience of Allāh
such that you do not abandon it,
patience upon staying away from sins
such that you do not commit them,
and patience with the painful decree of Allāh ﷻ
such that you do not become angry.

Allāh, the Exalted, said:

وَبَشِّرِ ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ {١٥٥} ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَآ أَصَٰبَتْهُم مُّصِيبَةٌ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ {١٥٦} أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ صَلَوَٰتٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ وَرَحْمَةٌ وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُهْتَدُونَ {١٥٧}

But give good tidings to the patient, who when afflicted with calamity, say: "Truly, to Allāh we belong and truly, to Him we shall return." Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided. **

[6] Exalt Allah and His Shariah First and Foremost

Allah, The Most High, said:

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِي حَاجَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِي رَبِّهِ أَنْ آتَاهُ اللَّهُ الْمُلْكَ إِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ رَبِّيَ الَّذِي يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ قَالَ أَنَا أُحْيِي وَأُمِيتُ ۖ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْتِي بِالشَّمْسِ مِنَ الْمَشْرِقِ فَأْتِ بِهَا مِنَ الْمَغْرِبِ فَبُهِتَ الَّذِي كَفَرَ ۗ وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ

Have you not seen (contemplated with your heart) him who disputed with Ibrahim (Abraham) about his Lord (Allah), because Allah had given him the kingdom? When Ibrahim (Abraham) said (to him): “My Lord (Allah) is He Who gives life and causes death.” He said, “I give life and cause death.” Ibrahim (Abraham) said, “Verily! Allah causes the sun to rise from the east; then cause it you to rise from the west.” So the disbeliever was utterly defeated. And Allah guides not the people, who are Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.).

He Who brings life and death (Allah) has absolute control over the existence and creates everything in it, including absolute control of its celestial bodies and their movements.
The sun rises everyday from the east, thus, if you were god, as you claim, who gives life and causes death, make the sun rise from the west. [3]

[7] Exalt Allah and His Shariah First and Foremost

Allah, The Almighty, said:

فَأَمَّا عَادٌ فَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ ٱلْحَقِّ وَقَالُوا۟ مَنْ أَشَدُّ مِنَّا قُوَّةً أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَهُمْ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً وَكَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا يَجْحَدُونَ

As for ‘Ad, they were arrogant in the land without right, and they said: “Who is mightier than us in strength?” See they not that Allah, Who created them was mightier in strength than them. And they used to deny Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, revelations, etc.)! [Fussilat 15]

They were deceived by their physical stature when faced with the threat of punishment, saying:

“We are able to avert the punishment from ourselves by virtue of our strength”.

This was due to their tall and mighty physiques. It has already been stated in the explanation of Surah Al-A’raf” (based on a report) by Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, that the tallest among them was one hundred cubits, while the shortest was sixty cubits.

In response, Allah said to them:

"See they not that Allah, Who created them was mightier in strength than them" and in
ability, rather, the ability of a person is contingent upon Allah's power, and indeed, Allah is
the most capable. [4]

Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with him, said, Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

"Verily, Allah will give respite to the oppressor until when He seizes him and he cannot escape".

Then he [i.e. the Messenger ﷺ] recited the verse:

وَكَذَٲلِكَ أَخۡذُ رَبِّكَ إِذَآ أَخَذَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ وَهِىَ ظَـٰلِمَةٌ‌ۚ إِنَّ أَخۡذَهُ ۥۤ أَلِيمٌ۬ شَدِيدٌ

Such is the Seizure of your Lord when He seizes the (population of) towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is painful, and severe]. [Hud. 102]

[8] Exalt Allah and His Shariah First and Foremost

Allah, The Most High, said:

مَّا فَرَّطۡنَا فِى ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ مِن شَىۡءٍ۬‌ۚ
We have neglected nothing in the Book.

There is nothing of these things that has been missed or forgotten by Allah in the preserved tablet; rather all things – be they small or big – are written in the preserved tablet just as they are.
All the events take place just as it was written down by the pen.

This Ayah is a proof that the first Book (i.e. the Lawh Al-Mahfoodh) contains all the things that will happen (i.e. written 50,000 years before the creation) and this is one of the levels of Divine Will and Decree. The Divine Will and Decree consists of four things:

Allah’s All-Encompassing knowledge of all things.

The writing down of everything that will exist.

His all-encompassing Will and Power over everything.

He created all the creation, even the actions of the slaves.

From Anas bin Malik who said that the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam said:

‘Whosoever said when he goes to his bed to sleep:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَفَانِي وَآوَانِي
Praise be to Allaah Who has sufficed me and given me shelter,
Alhamdulillaah allathi kaffaani wa Awaani


الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي وَسَقَانِي
Praise be to Allaah Who has fed me and given me drink,
Alhamdulillaah allathi Atta’amani wa Saqqani


الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي مَنَّ عَلَيَّ فَأَفْضَلَ
Praise be to Allaah Who has blessed me and increased blessings upon me,
Alhamdulillaah allathi Manna alayee fa Afdaala


اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِعِزَّتِكَ أَنْ تُنَجِّيَنِي مِنْ النَّارِ
O Allaah indeed I ask of You, by Your Honour to save me from the Hellfire.’
Allaahumma inni assaluka bi ‘Izza’atak un Tanjeeni min an-Naar.


فقد حمد الله بمحامد الخلق كلهمُ.
Then he has praised Allaah with all the praises of all creation.’

[9] Exalt Allah and His Shariah First and Foremost

Allah, The Exalted, stated His disapproval of the polytheists – those who (worship things adopted as) gods in the earth, even though these gods are absolutely incapacitated and powerless. Neither are they are able to bring them back to life nor resurrect them, and this is further explained by the statement of Allah:

وَاتَّخَذُوا مِنْ دُونِهِ آلِهَةً لاَ يَخْلُقُونَ شَيْئًا وَهُمْ يُخْلَقُونَ وَلاَ يَمْلِكُونَ ِلأَنفُسِهِمْ ضَرًّا وَلاَ نَفْعًا وَلاَ يَمْلِكُونَ مَوْتًا وَلاَ حَيَاةً وَلاَ نُشُورًا

Yet they have taken besides Him other aliha (gods) that created nothing but are themselves created, and possess neither hurt nor benefit for themselves, and possess no power (of causing) death, nor (of giving) life, nor of raising the dead. [Al-Furqan. 3]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

لَوْ كَانَ فِيهِمَا آلِهَةٌ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ لَفَسَدَتَا فَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

Had there been therein (in the heavens and the earth) gods besides Allaah, then verily both [i.e. the heavens and the earth] would have been ruined. Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, (High is He) above what they attribute to Him! [Al-Anbiya. 22]

Meaning, both the heavens and the earth would have been ruined as well as the creation within them. The heavens and the earth – as one can see – are in a perfect state, intact and in perfect order.

Neither is there any defect in them and obstacles (to its perfect order) nor conflict in its organisation. Thus, this shows that the One who controls and regulates its affairs is One- its Lord is one...
