As Japan Airlines flight JL516 skidded to a fiery halt after colliding with another plane on the runway at Tokyo Haneda airport on Jan. 2, cabin crew faced a daunting scenario.

The intercom system to communicate between flight deck and cabin had broken down, one of the giant engines was still spinning and couldn’t be shut off, and only three of the eight escape doors were available to evacuate the stricken aircraft as flames licked up the kerosene-covered fuselage.

In the end, all 367 passengers and 12 crew got off the Airbus A350 alive. Given the odds, their escape is even more remarkable, the result of modern aircraft design, skilled crew and — not least — passengers who stayed calm and left their bags behind. Microsoft’s hardware partners will show off Windows 11 computers with the Copilot button over the coming days at the CES technology conference and, over time, it will become a required feature. Read more: https://trib.al/oQFcbJr

Huawei's new laptops stirred speculation China's SMIC achieved another chip breakthrough. A teardown shows that's not the case.

The Qingyun L540 notebook contains a 5-nanometer chip made by TSMC in 2020, around the time US sanctions cut off Huawei’s access to the chipmaker, research firm TechInsights found after dismantling the device for Bloomberg News.

That counters speculation that Huawei’s domestic chipmaking partner may have achieved a major leap in fabrication technique. More here: https://bloom.bg/3NNM5vG

When President Xi Jinping held talks in California with his US counterpart Joe Biden in November, seated to his right was a man who is quietly emerging as one of China’s most influential politicians.

Cai Qi wields unusual clout for China’s No. 5 official. Not only does he sit on the seven-man Politburo Standing Committee, China’s most powerful body, but he also serves as Xi’s chief of staff — making him the first person to hold both positions since the Mao Zedong era.

Those dual titles have given Cai another privilege: He’s the only member of China’s top decision-making body to publicly travel overseas with Xi during his decade-plus in power. Standing Committee members traditionally do not accompany Chinese leaders abroad as they manage their own portfolios. Google is laying off hundreds of staff working on its digital assistant, hardware and engineering teams, the company said as it continues its drive to cut costs.

Among the affected workers are those working on the voice-based Google Assistant and at the augmented reality hardware team. Workers in the company’s central engineering organization were also hit by the cuts, the company said.

“Throughout the second half of 2023, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, and to align their resources to their biggest product priorities,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement. “Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally.” More: https://bloom.bg/3HgETEA

Indian expats are driving a boom in luxury property sales back home, seeking to benefit from a soaring economy and a weak rupee.

The surging demand has pushed top-end home sales to a 10-year high and NRIs are likely to make up 20% of it. “The rental yields are good, the market is realistic and prices are affordable,” says Dubai-based Sunil Pillai, who left India 25 years ago and recently bought a two-bedroom apartment costing around $1 million in tech hub Bengaluru.

The boom is in sharp contrast to property markets elsewhere. In China, homes sales have slumped due to economic uncertainty and a crisis among developers, while in the US and Europe, demand for real estate has slowed as interest rates surged. Read more: https://trib.al/SFpqA4k
