What Is Finality in Blockchain?

In the blockchain world, finality is the bedrock of security and efficiency, guaranteeing that once transactions are confirmed, they're set in stone.

This is especially crucial for digital assets, where the specter of double-spending looms large—a scenario where a single unit of cryptocurrency could be illicitly used multiple times, undermining the very foundation of trust in digital currencies.

🤔 Different Flavors of Finality:

Probabilistic Finality: Common in public chains, where transactions could technically be reversed, but it's highly unlikely.

Instant Finality: Found in private chains, where trusted validators make transactions irreversible in a snap.

Economic Finality: Here, reversing transactions is not just hard, but it'd hit the validators' pockets hard.

BSC introduced Fast Finality with the BEP-126 update, by integrating Proof-of-Stake Authority (PoSA) with Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) mechanisms. With Fast Finality transaction finality time dips from 45 seconds to just 7.5 seconds.
