🔆 ICAR-IIOR Develops Smart Seed Coating Technology for Climate-Resilient Agriculture

🌟 Summary

✅ Ministry : Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (ICAR)

✅ Scheme : Indian Patent for Smart Seed Coating Technology

✅ Objective : To drastically improve seedling emergence, root vigor, and drought tolerance, specifically in India's highly vulnerable rainfed agricultural zones.

✅ One-line core essence of the article : Indian scientists patented a revolutionary biodegradable seed coating that packs essential microbes and nutrients directly onto the seed, guaranteeing crop survival against erratic monsoons.

♻️ Key Highlights

🔹 The Innovation : A multi-functional, biodegradable biopolymeric protective layer that acts as a targeted delivery system for nutrients, bio-pesticides, and growth promoters right at the seed-soil interface.

🔹 Yield Enhancements : Extensive multi-crop trials (soybean, groundnut, millets) demonstrated productivity surges ranging from 12% to 37% over untreated controls.

🔹 Drought Insurance : By accelerating root development in the first few critical days, the technology serves as physical insurance against intermittent moisture stress and delayed monsoons.

🔍 Important Concepts

✅ Rainfed Agriculture : Over 50% of India's net sown area is rainfed (dependent entirely on monsoons rather than irrigation), making it exceptionally vulnerable to climate change and dry spells.

🗿 Crux

✅ In an era of unpredictable climate change, securing the germination phase is half the battle for farmers.

✅ By shifting from bulk soil fertilization to precision "Smart Seed Coating," ICAR is maximizing resource-use efficiency—ensuring that every drop of water and speck of nutrient is utilized, radically de-risking dryland farming.

🧠 Prelims Focus

🔹 Technologies: Biodegradable biopolymeric seed coating.

▪ Transverse waves cannot travel through gases.
▪ This is because gas particles are too far apart to maintain the necessary perpendicular displacement required for transverse wave propagation.

The quality or timber of sound is that characteristic which enables us to distinguish one sound from another having the same pitch and loudness

BPSC/UPSC One-Liner Revision
Pinna → Collects sound.
Auditory canal → Carries sound.
Eardrum (Tympanic membrane) → Vibrates.
Middle ear → Contains Hammer, Anvil, Stirrup (Ossicles).
Stapes (Stirrup) → Smallest bone in the human body.
Ossicles → Amplify sound vibrations.
Cochlea → Converts mechanical vibrations into electrical impulses.
Auditory nerve → Carries impulses to the brain.
Brain → Interprets electrical impulses as sound.
Compression pushes the eardrum inward; rarefaction pulls it outward, causing vibration.
