Shifting Cultivation (Slash and Burn Agriculture)
Shifting cultivation is one of the oldest methods of agriculture, primarily practiced by tribal communities. It is also known as the 'Slash and Burn' system because vegetation is cleared by cutting or burning before cultivation.
Process of Shifting Cultivation
Clearing Land: Farmers cut down natural vegetation and burn it to clear the field.
Cultivation: Crops are grown on the cleared land for a few years.
Declining Fertility: After continuous farming, soil fertility decreases.
Shifting to New Land: Farmers abandon the exhausted land and move to a new area, repeating the process.
Environmental Impact
* Deforestation due to repeated clearing of land.
* Soil Erosion and loss of soil fertility.
* Air Pollution due to burning vegetation.
* Biodiversity Loss as natural habitats are destroyed.
Regions Practicing Shifting Cultivation in India
This method is mainly practiced in:
Northeastern states – Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh.
Central India – Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
Western India – Some parts of Rajasthan.
