Waymo Self-Driving Taxi Avoids Major Freeway Crash in Los Angeles

A Waymo self-driving taxi avoided a potentially serious collision on a California freeway, according to dashcam footage shared by the company’s co-CEO. The incident happened on the 10 Freeway in Los Angeles and was reportedly linked to street racing.

Video shows an out-of-control vehicle slamming into a freeway wall before stopping in the middle of the roadway directly ahead of the approaching Waymo car. The autonomous vehicle then safely maneuvered around the disabled car, avoiding impact. Waymo co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov said the taxi detected the danger early and “maneuvered defensively to safely bypass the scene.”
