Marlboro was the first company to introduce the so-called "flip-tops"βcigarette packs with a flip-top lid. The issue was that many buyers had gotten clever enough to remove cigarettes from the pack without taking it out of their pocket, which meant that the brand name wasnβt visible. They decided to remedy this unprecedented trick by introducing such a pack: now, without a certain dexterity, you couldnβt get a cigarette out of it. In this way, Marlboro forced its consumers to remove the pack, displaying the brand name and packagingβa move that positively impacted sales.
