Liberal Staffers Reassigned After Carney Button Controversy
Several Liberal staffers have been reassigned following controversy over distributing campaign buttons featuring Mark Carney at a recent party event. The move came after concerns that promoting the former Bank of Canada governor, who has not officially entered politics, could breach party rules and stir internal tensions. The Prime Ministerβs Office acted quickly to address the issue and maintain party discipline.

She was chatting with friends in a Lyft. Then someone texted her what they said
Anvi Ahuja noticed a "freaky" new text message from a number she didn't know right after getting back to her downtown Toronto apartment last month.
The text was a transcript of the conversation she'd just had with her roommates during their eight-minute Lyft ride home from a friend's place.
"I was like 'who is taping me?'" Ahuja said. "The driver didn't inform us that we could be recorded."
Within a few minutes she called the number the text came from and heard this looping, automated message: "We can't connect your call because your driver is not available right now."

Nearly 60 pieces of evidence entered at trial of B.C. lawyer accused of murdering his client
An Exacto knife, a 12-inch blade, and a shovel were among the nearly 60 pieces of evidence submitted in a Kamloops, B.C., courtroom on Monday at the trial of a lawyer accused of killing his client. Rogelio Bagabuyo is charged with first-degree murder in the March 2022 death of Mohd Abdullah, a Thompson Rivers University science professor.
Bagabuyo, 57, who goes by the nickname Butch, wore glasses and sat behind his lawyers in a B.C. Supreme Court courtroom. He took notes as Justice Kathleen Ker logged dozens of exhibits into evidence at the judge-alone trial.

CRA accounts hacked after 28,000 social insurance numbers stolen in data breach
Nurse Leslie Warner will never forget being taken to her local RCMP detachment in Fernie, B.C., in 2022 and charged in a social security fraud operating out of Alberta.
She says she was fingerprinted and had her mug shot taken.
"I was like: 'Oh my God, this is my identity theft,'" Warner recalls telling police. "I did not do this."
The fraud charges were dropped soon after she explained that an imposter had been using her identity since 2020, when someone hacked into her Canada Revenue Agency account and filed a bogus return in Alberta that stated tax preparation company H&R Block was her new "authorized representative."

Alberta introduces controversial involuntary addictions treatment bill
The Alberta government introduced its long-promised and controversial bill on Tuesday to force people with severe substance addictions into involuntary treatment.
Bill 53, the Compassionate Intervention Act, lays out the criteria, guidelines and process for a family member or guardian, health-care professional or police officer to get someone into treatment. "This program is not for the vast majority of Albertans who suffer from addiction," Dan Williams, Alberta's minister of mental health and addiction, told a news conference in Edmonton.

New study shows increased pathogens near B.C. open-net salmon farms
A new study led by the Pacific Salmon Foundation and four northern Vancouver Island First Nations suggests that water collected near active open-net salmon farms contains four times more pathogens harmful to wild salmon than samples collected near inactive salmon farms.
The study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Scientific Reports, examined environmental DNA to determine the levels of bacteria, fungi and viruses previously shown to be harmful to wild salmon. The Pacific Salmon Foundation says researchers collected samples from areas around the Broughton Archipelago near north Vancouver Island, including active and inactive open-net salmon farms.

Debates commission unaware Rebel News registered as advocacy group, official says
The head of Canada's Leaders' Debates Commission said he "wasn't aware" that Rebel News had registered as a third-party advocacy group with Elections Canada before allowing its employees to take part in the post-debate news conferences.
Organizations, other than political parties, that want to fundraise and spend money on advertisements during the election in an effort to sway voters need to register with Elections Canada.
Typically these organizations, which Elections Canada calls third parties, are advocacy groups trying to push special interests.
