More Alberta municipalities scrapping photo radar in response to provincial restrictions

The number of municipalities using photo radar and red-light cameras in Alberta has dropped by more than a third since last year, according to figures from the province. Seventeen municipalities, including Edmonton and Calgary, still have automated traffic enforcement programs — down from 26 last year. 

The provincial government announced in December it would be banning photo radar on all provincial highways and connectors, restricting its use to school, playground and construction zones and no longer allowing speed-on-green cameras at intersections.

Prince Albert police partner with Sask. Marshals to install biometric health sensors in cells

The Prince Albert Police Service will install health monitoring technology in some of its detention cells to alert staff if someone goes into medical distress.

Devices will be mounted on the ceiling cells and use radar to monitor heart rate, elevated temperature and respiratory concerns of someone inside the cell. "We're hearing from our partner agencies and Estevan and Regina, who have implemented the software and have already reported back that it saved lives," Patrick Nogier, Prince Albert's police chief, said in an interview Tuesday.

B.C. forecast for drought and wildfire is bleak, but don't panic yet, say officials

B.C. is already reporting some areas of extreme drought, which could spell bad news for the summer ahead.

In the province's first drought update of 2025, a few areas have been highlighted as regions of concern, including the Fort Nelson, North Peace and East Peace regions which have been recorded as having moderate to severe drought conditions. Most of the province has yet to be assessed but Vancouver Island is also reported as having level three drought conditions, on a scale of zero to five.

Highway protests won't be tolerated during G7 summit in Kananaskis, head of security says

The head of security for the upcoming G7 leaders' summit in Kananaskis says his group is still working with the Town of Banff on the precise location of a "demonstration zone" for protesters to express their opinions, but it's already been determined where demonstrators won't be allowed — on highways.

"We're not going to be able to tolerate a protest on a highway," Alberta RCMP Chief Supt. David Hall told The Homestretch on Thursday.

"It's not safe for motorists; it's not safe for the protesters, themselves. And so that's something that we would look to quickly move off of a highway, in the event that a protest established on the highway."

Kingston Police's use of a drone to catch distracted drivers stirs backlash

Drivers at three busy intersections in Kingston, Ont., had no way of knowing they were being watched earlier this month, but high above them police hovered, zooming in to catch those using their phones while behind the wheel. By the end of the day on May 7, officers had handed out 20 tickets for distracted driving — each alleged violation captured on video by a drone flying overhead.

It was the first time Kingston Police had used the tactic, and as residents  heard what was going on, debate began to swell on social media between those who felt it had crossed a line and others who believed a novel approach was needed.

NDP holds Nunavut after Elections Canada validates results

After a delay due to a blizzard, Elections Canada has validated the results in Nunavut and confirmed NDP incumbent Lori Idlout has prevailed over Liberal challenger Kilikvak Kabloona.

The results were posted on Elections Canada's website Friday evening. Validation is a procedure in which Elections Canada double-checks and verifies the numbers reported on election night.

It took more than two weeks for Elections Canada to validate the results because the final ballot box from the community of Naujaat was delayed. It was sent to Iqaluit but got stuck at the airline cargo facility in Rankin Inlet when a rare late-spring blizzard hit Iqaluit on Thursday.
