Manitobans, Indigenous leaders watching closely as King Charles set to deliver throne speech

The head of the Assembly of First Nations says King Charles III's first visit to Canada as king can work as a step in improving the relationship between Indigenous people and The Crown.

"Colonialism has always infringed on First Peoples and I think we have to reset that relationship and find a new way and find a way to respect each other more," said Assembly of First Nations National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak, who is from Pinaymootang First Nation in Manitoba's Interlake, prior to a meeting with the King in Ottawa on Monday evening. "But also have those tough conversations about [things like] actual revenue sharing and finding a different path forward," she said.

People living in Pelican Narrows, 400 kilometres northeast of Prince Albert, Sask., are being told to leave the community immediately as a wildfire burns dangerously close to town.

The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation has declared a state of emergency.

Wildfires have been burning in the area for weeks and hundreds of people have already been evacuated to centres in Saskatoon, Prince Albert and Flin Flon.

Developers seek to expand Ottawa suburbs after Ontario rules rewritten

Several Ottawa housing developers have already taken advantage of a significant change to Ontario planning rules and made individual requests to the City of Ottawa aimed at having their large rural properties earmarked for future subdivisions.

But they haven't necessarily agreed with the hefty $1.8 million fee council decided to charge or the list of technical studies it required, so developers have filed at least four or five appeals and put the city on the defensive at the Ontario Land Tribunal in recent months. The Ontario government's new provincial planning statement took effect last October. Within days, paperwork was submitted to city planners to expand the urban boundary by hundreds of hectares north of Kanata, in the Cedarview area of Barrhaven, and on the edge of Stittsville.

Construction worker airlifted to Kingston hospital after building site collapse

A construction worker was airlifted to a Kingston hospital from a Brockville, Ont. construction site Wednesday afternoon after being trapped for hours and suffering serious injuries, according to Brockville Police.

Multiple emergency crews spent "several hours" working together to try to extricate the man, who had become trapped in a multi-level building in development, police explained in a press release. The injured man was finally rescued and airlifted to the Kingston Health Sciences Centre by an Ornge air ambulance, said Jeff Carss, chief of the Leeds Grenville Paramedic Service.

Quebec doctors say new bill will drive them away, threaten patient access

Doctors at a medical clinic in Kingsey Falls, a town in central Quebec, say they are contemplating closing their clinic and pivoting out of family practice — or Quebec altogether — if a bill allowing the province to regulate how physicians are paid is adopted as it is written.

Bill 106, tabled earlier this month, would link up to 25 per cent of physicians' pay to their performance in an effort to get them to take on more patients.

But in a statement posted to their social media, doctors at the Kingsey Falls medical clinic said the new rules would impose unattainable performance targets on them and reduce their ability to deliver quality care to patients.
