'All in the same boat,' Hamilton workers on strike for weeks in various sectors band together
Justin Dailey, a return-to-work specialist with Ontario's WSIB, is among 3,600 employees on strike since May 22, citing a "toxic" workplace and failed contract negotiations. Represented by CUPE Local 1750, the workers say they were locked out by WSIB shortly after launching rolling strikes. Dailey expressed concern for injured workers and described the situation as part of a broader, systemic attack on unions and workers. He noted solidarity with other striking workers in Hamilton, including those from Hamilton Water, DHL Express Canada, and Canadian Hearing Services, emphasizing the city's strong union tradition.

Halifax Tenant Fights a Decade-Long Apartment Flooding Battle
Karen Crane, a 62-year-old nurse in Halifax, has spent nearly 10 years trying to resolve persistent flooding and heating issues in her apartment. Despite favourable rulings from Nova Scotia’s residential tenancies program and a municipal building inspector, the landlord has yet to complete the repairs. Crane and legal aid advocates criticize the enforcement process as broken, since orders are issued but not effectively enforced—leaving tenants with little recourse.

City of Ottawa settles with developers over 'excessive' $1.8M fees
It appears the City of Ottawa set its fees too high when it decided to charge $1.8 million to property owners wanting to apply for a one-off expansion of the urban boundary.
A hearing was set for June 2 at the Ontario Land Tribunal for an appeal by five home builders that want to convert rural land along March Road north of Kanata for urban development. CBC News has learned the city instead agreed to a settlement that sees the developers pay just one-sixth of the application fees the city had originally charged.

Carney's major projects bill passed. Now he says 'the real work begins'
Now that Bill C-5 has become law, Prime Minister Mark Carney says the government is beginning the critical task of fast-tracking major national projects. The bill's second part, the Building Canada Act, allows the federal cabinet to designate projects as nationally significant, bypassing environmental reviews, permitting processes, and even federal laws.
While the government hasn’t yet identified which projects will be expedited, ministers are holding closed-door meetings over the summer to decide. They will also consult provinces, territories, and Indigenous groups to identify suitable proposals. Critics warn the bill could undermine environmental protections, constitutional rights, and democratic oversight.

Tornado fells trees after touching down in central Alberta
A tornado touched down in central Alberta on Wednesday, cutting a path through a treed area, but apparently sparing the area from any more serious damage. Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a tornado warning Wednesday afternoon for an area west of Drayton Valley.
Storm chaser Trenten Pentelichuk said he watched the twister touch down near the hamlet of Lodgepole — about 175 kilometres southwest of Edmonton. He'd been in the area all afternoon, waiting to see if the significant storm activity in the forecast would actually create a tornado.

'It weighs on you': Ontario wildland firefighters being overworked due to lack of resources, union says
The union representing Ontario's wildland firefighters says they're working long hours that are contributing to "fatigue," and is calling for a funding increase to address a lack of resources.
"Historically Ontario's had about 180 four-person fire crews," said Noah Freedman, a wildfire crew leader in northwestern Ontario and vice-president of Local 703 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU). "That's not accounting for all the changes," he said. "Things are getting hotter, seasons are getting longer, a little drier.

Calgary Stampede: What the 'Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth' says about the economy
The purple toasted cob of corn shines under the afternoon sun as 25-year-old Allison Zhou lifts it up to show her friends on the opening day of the Calgary Stampede. It's ube-flavoured and covered in white and black sesame seeds. The cost? $15.
"Overpriced, but it's my first Stampede," said Zhou, who moved to the city a few months ago from Toronto. "It's very unique, so I'm down to try it."
At the midpoint of 2025, it's been a tough rodeo for Canada's economy so far, ever since U.S. President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January, sparking a tumultuous trade war with wide-ranging impacts on consumer spending, jobs and travel plans.
