Vancouver Art Gallery cutting staff, programming by about 30%
The Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) is making deep cuts to its programming and staffing in an attempt to balance its budget. Eva Respini, VAG interim co-CEO, said overall, the cuts will amount to about 30 per cent. She said before the layoffs, there were 129 employees. Last month, 16 people accepted voluntary departure incentives, and 18 people have received layoffs since then.
"We're really looking across the institution, trying to leave no stone unturned, and we really tried to save as many roles, as many jobs as possible," said Respini, adding that there's a union seniority process now taking place that could affect the final number of people who lose their jobs.

ER closures forced by shortage of doctors, nurses raise fears in rural Sask.
Residents in some rural Saskatchewan communities say closures forced by a shortage of doctors and nurses have left them without access to emergency room services, forcing residents to travel long distances in critical moments.
"The closures are just β¦ coming one after the other," said Angela Silzer, who runs Interlake Human Resources Corporation, a non-profit organization and group home for adults with intellectual disabilities in Watrous, southeast of Saskatoon.
Silzer's facility is across the street from the local hospital, which has had to close its ER dozens of times since the start of the year.

Edmonton a step closer to tap credit, debit payments to ride transit
The City of Edmonton is launching a trial period to expand its transit payment system to include direct credit and debit card transactions.
The city phased out all traditional paper tickets in November, forcing Edmonton transit riders to buy an Arc card or Arc ticket. But testing direct debit or credit payments is another step toward an open-payment system, which are already implemented in some other major Canadian cities like Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa.

CUSMA-compliant goods exempt from Trump's latest tariff threat on Canada
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened a new 35% tariff on imports from Canada, but a Trump administration official clarified that the levy would not apply to goods compliant with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). The tariff is expected to target items already subject to a 25% rate, while tariffs on potash and energy are likely to remain at 10%. No final decisions have been made. Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by reaffirming support for Canadian workers and businesses. Trump said Canadian officials were informed of the proposal and seemed receptive, reiterating his stance that the U.S. has long been exploited in trade deals.
