9 Ontario First Nations ask for injunction against Bill 5, say law represents 'clear and present danger'
Nine First Nations in Ontario are asking a court to declare a pair of federal and provincial laws meant to fast-track infrastructure projects unconstitutional and are seeking an injunction that would prevent the governments from using some of the most contentious aspects.
The Indigenous communities say in the legal challenge filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice that the federal law known as Bill C-5 and the Ontario law known as Bill 5 both represent a "clear and present danger" to the First Nations' self-determination rights to ways of life on their territories.
"While the laws do leave open or commit that there will be some First Nation consultation at the very first stage ... involvement in that decision alone is a smoke and mirrors trick, deflecting attention from all the other ways the laws necessarily diminish the ability of First Nations to engage on the regimes' broader consequences," they write in the court challenge.

Toronto man in $36M cross-border drug operation sentenced in Windsor to 16 years in prison
Marvin Watson, a 32-year-old Toronto man, was sentenced to 16 years in prison for his role in a $36 million cross-border cocaine and meth trafficking operation. Speaking in a Windsor, Ontario court, Watson expressed remorse, saying he felt trapped in criminal activity and saw arrest as his only way out. He pleaded guilty in September to multiple charges, including drug importation, trafficking, money laundering, and possession of crime-related property. After time served and other deductions, he will spend about 14 years and five months in prison. His partner, Maria Kiguru, who was pregnant at the time and also involved in laundering money, received a two-year conditional sentence.

B.C. Child Welfare Watchdog Highlights Progress, Calls for Continued Action
While British Columbiaโs child welfare system has made strides since the tragic death of an Indigenous child, concerns remain. The province now sees over 90% of children in care within 90 days and has initiated a child wellbeing strategy. However, staffing shortages, insufficient community supports, and limited funding continue to hamper timely assistance for vulnerable youth, according to the representative for children and youth.

Federal government files $60M counterclaim against LaSalle Causeway contractor
The Canadian government is countersuing the contractor it hired to repair the LaSalle Causeway lift bridge in Kingston, Ont., for $60 million and counting.
In a statement of defence filed in response to a lawsuit brought by Landform Civil Infrastructures Inc. (LCI), lawyers for the Attorney General argue the company caused a "catastrophic failure" that resulted in the demolition of the century-old crossing. "Any damages suffered by LCI were a consequence of its own failure to properly perform the Work," the 34-page document states.

Heated dispute over Health P.E.I. benchmarks for family doctors heading for mediation
Three of the biggest players in Prince Edward Island's health-care system have agreed to begin a mediation process regarding how many patients family doctors can and should handle.
In a joint news release late Tuesday, the Medical Society of P.E.I., along with the Department of Health and Wellness and Health P.E.I. said they've been having "meaningful and constructive" conversations "over the past number of days" about a controversial side document to the latest Physician Services Agreement.
"While the mediation process unfolds, government, Health P.E.I. and [the society] will work together so Islanders will continue to gain access to primary care services โ including those who are currently on the patient registry," the joint statement from the group said.

'This is a scam': Poilievre wants rules changed to stop long ballot protests
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling for changes to Canada's election laws to prevent "long ballot" protests, where dozens of candidates are registered in a single riding to disrupt the voting process. At a recent town hall in Stettler, Alberta, Poilievre called the tactic a "scam" and "unjust," noting it had previously affected his own riding. The Longest Ballot Committee, an electoral reform group, has organized these protests to draw attention to voting system flaws, leading to lengthy ballots that slow vote counting and confuse voters.

Former Pembroke doctor facing sexual assault charges
A former doctor in Pembroke, Ont., who lost his licence to practise medicine is facing four criminal charges including the alleged sexual assault of two minors. Now 75, Brian Baxter is charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual touching of a minor. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said it launched an investigation in June following allegations from a Pembroke resident.
It's not the first time Baxter has come under public scrutiny. In 2021, he was referred to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) for disciplinary proceedings following allegations of professional misconduct, including sexual abuse of patients.

'We've been looking for almost a year': Why Sask.'s housing market is red hot
It is a sellers' market across Saskatchewan and first-time homebuyers say they are having a hard time making that milestone purchase, bidding on multiple homes that end up selling for more than the asking price.
"I just thought that it would be a lot easier in a city like Regina," said Ruth Aguilar, 25, who has been looking to buy her first home with her husband, Aaron Gunther, for almost a year.
"We put an offer on three houses, but they're going for thousands over asking, like some even upwards of $50,000 over asking," Aguilar said.

SIU clears Thunder Bay, Ont., police of wrongdoing in First Nation woman's death
Ontarioโs Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has cleared a Thunder Bay police officer of any wrongdoing in the December 30, 2023, death of 21-year-old Jenna Ostberg, a Bearskin Lake First Nation member. Ostberg was found dead in a closet at a Thunder Bay residence, hours after three 911 calls were made. The first, at 2:05 a.m., reported her as an unwanted person; a second call at 2:23 a.m. cancelled the request, believing she had left. A third call at 10:34 a.m. reported her body. The SIU could not confirm her exact time of death but suggested suicide may have occurred after 2:42 a.m., based on her last phone activity. The SIU concluded there was no evidence to support criminal charges against the responding officer.

Manitoba needs more fire rangers to keep communities safe from future risks, chief says
The province is going to need to shore up its force of wildfire fighters in the future if it hopes to save more remote communities from having to endure the worsening cycle of forced evacuations, destroyed property and destruction of forests, says a northern Manitoba grand chief.
Grand Chief Alex McDougall of Anisininew Okimawin โ a coalition of First Nations from northeastern Manitoba's Island Lake area, which has been largely evacuated due to wildfires โ says more boots on the ground would've been a game-changer for his region.

Implement countrywide Red Dress Alert to prevent need for landfill searches for women: MMIWG advocate
As one landfill search ends and another is planned to begin, an MMIWG advocate says countrywide implementation of the Red Dress Alert and addressing "systemic racism" could prevent the agony of such searches ever needing to happen again.
"We know when someone is missing, time is of an essence to locate them and to find them safely," said Hilda Anderson-Pyrz, a member of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation in Manitoba and chair of the National Family and Survivors Circle.

More than 100 candidates โ most in Canadian history โ to run against Poilievre in byelection
The upcoming byelection in Alberta's Battle River-Crowfoot will set a new Canadian record for the most candidates on a federal ballot, with 102 registered so farโsurpassing the previous record of 91. The surge is driven largely by the Longest Ballot Committee, a group advocating for electoral reform through citizen assemblies. The byelection was triggered by MP Damien Kurekโs resignation to allow Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to run after losing his former seat. The Committee aims to register up to 200 candidates before the July 28 deadline, using long ballots as a form of protest to highlight the need for more representative governance.
