Tyra the Tyrannosaurus on the ballot in Drumheller, Alta.
AJ Frey, the businessman who launched a 25,000-signature petition to save Drumhellerβs giant dinosaur statue βTyra,β is running for town council and making the attraction a campaign issue. Tyraβs future is uncertain pending an engineering study on refurbishment costs, after the Chamber of Commerce announced plans to dismantle her in 2029. The statue, a major tourist draw for 25 years, has become a focal point in the Oct. 20 civic election. Chamber president and mayoral candidate Lana Phillips acknowledged Tyraβs importance but stressed broader community issues. Outgoing Mayor Heather Colberg said she remains committed to saving the landmark despite leaving office before the reportβs release.

The Royal to reopen emergency clinic amid rising demand for mental health care
Twenty-five years after its controversial closure, the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre plans to reopen an urgent care clinic at its Carling Avenue campus.
The clinic is being designed as an alternative to hospital emergency departments, offering quicker and more specialized support for people experiencing mental health or substance use crises. Cara Vaccarino, president and CEO of The Royal, said the clinic will help fill "serious gaps in the continuum of care" in Ottawa when it opens next year.

Thousands in Calgary, Edmonton rally for public education as Alberta teachers' strike looms
More than 20,000 Albertans assembled in the province's two largest cities Sunday, with many holding flags or picket signs as they chanted for greater government support for public education.
The rallies come a day before Alberta's 51,000 teachers are set to strike. If the teachers' union and provincial government are unable to reach an eleventh-hour deal, Monday will mark the first provincewide teachers' strike in Alberta history.
"Public education is a foundation of a strong democratic society," Heather Quinn, president of ATA Local 37, which represents Edmonton public school teachers, said during a speech on the Legislature's steps.

Passport service cuts target minorities and people with disabilities, union says
Public servants who are from diverse backgrounds, have disabilities or are involved in union activities are being disproportionately targeted by cuts to the passport service, according to the Union of National Employees (UNE).
The union filed two grievances challenging a process it considers to be discriminatory and in violation of the collective agreement and the Canadian Human Rights Act. In May, 800 contract employees across the country β but concentrated in Quebec β were told they would no longer have their jobs in June. Of these, 350 felt aggrieved and are contesting their terminations through an action started by the UNE.

Teachers' strike risks putting strain on Alberta economy, business leaders warn
With Alberta teachers on strike as of Monday and more than 730,000 K-12 students across the province out of school for the foreseeable future, many parents and business owners are struggling to cope.
Deborah Yedlin, president and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, said families having to contend with cancelled classes could have significant implications for the provincial economy. "When we talk about economic productivity, this is also a strain on Alberta's economy, because if parents are distracted, if they can't do what they need to do from a working standpoint, that's not good from an economic standpoint either," she said.

It's 'full steam ahead' for the F-35 program until told otherwise, defence official says
Canada is proceeding "full steam ahead" on the F-35 fighter program until it hears otherwise, a top Department of National Defence official has told a House of Commons committee.
Deputy Defence Minister Stefani Beck testified before the tri-party public accounts committee on Tuesday, which is studying the latest auditor general's report on the increased cost of acquiring the stealth jet.
Last spring, shortly after coming to power, Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered a review of the $27.7 billion purchase from U.S. defence giant Lockheed Martin.
