Alberta will need B.C. government’s backing to build proposed pipeline: energy minister

Canada’s energy minister says Alberta will need to get its neighbouring province on board in order to see its proposed pipeline project to the West Coast come to fruition.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced earlier this month that her government will get started on its proposal for a bitumen pipeline that would run across northern British Columbia to the Pacific Ocean.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson said the Alberta government will need to get the approval of the B.C. government and affected Indigenous communities in order for the project to be built.

As drought conditions persist, some wells running dry in rural Ottawa

As dry weather persists this fall, some residents living in rural Ottawa say the private wells they rely on for water are running empty.

In Kinburn, a community in rural west Ottawa, Tammy Johnstone's well keeps the tap water inside her home running. Peering down into the well on Thursday, Johnstone said it was "almost completely dry," making tasks like doing laundry and showering difficult.

Agriculture Canada monitors drought conditions across the country each month, ranking their severity on a scale of zero to four. In a statement to CBC News on Thursday, the agency said eastern Ontario saw an expansion of Level 2 or "severe drought," as well as the emergence of Level 3 or "extreme drought" in some areas from Kingston to Ottawa.

Vancouver Park Board's apology over Harry Potter event catches J.K. Rowling's attention

Vancouver’s park board passed a motion apologizing to the 2SLGBTQ+ community for hosting the Harry Potter Forbidden Forest Experience in Stanley Park, acknowledging the harm caused by associating with J.K. Rowling, whose views on transgender rights have been widely criticized. The board also stated the event will run for one season only. Rowling responded on X, saying she hadn’t realized she’d been “disavowed” and was unaffected by it. Members of Vancouver’s 2SLGBTQ+ Advisory Committee argued that featuring Rowling’s work gives a platform to someone who promotes harmful views toward transgender people and that any financial benefit she receives could support her activism against trans rights.

Niagara Falls mayor stresses urgency of finding Marineland belugas a new home as it’s running out of food

Marineland is running out of food — and money — to feed the 30 beluga whales and other animals that live at its now-shuttered park, says the mayor of Niagara Falls, Ont.

“Unfortunately, they’re telling us they’re burning the furniture to heat the house,” Jim Diodati told Radio-Canada in an interview Friday. “There’s no money.” He said he spoke to park representatives Thursday, and learned it has restructured and borrowed money to continue to buy food for the belugas, dolphins, sea lions, seals, deer and bears — but it’s only a matter of time before it runs out.

Canada Post workers will return to work, hoping Canadians take up their cause

Canadians should start receiving mail again on Tuesday, after Canada Post workers shift from nationwide strike action to a rotating strike on Saturday morning.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, which represents 55,000 Canada Post employees, says the battle for a fair collective agreement continues, but that the downgraded labour action allows workers to resume their jobs and remind Canadians that a full postal service is worth fighting for.

“[With] the majority of our workers back to work, people are able to go out and talk to the public,” said Jim Gallant, a CUPW negotiator. “The public sees what worth there is in the post office.”

N.B. researchers use satellite tech and AI to identify critical habitats in the wild

A New Brunswick-led research project is using satellite imaging and artificial intelligence to find and predict where old forests are, in an effort to develop better management practices for the forestry sector.

Northern Hardwoods Research Institute is leading the project, with funding from the Canadian Space Agency, from its Edmundston facility. The team will use data from satellites that fly over the same forested area each week. Gaetan Pelletier is the institute's executive director. He said the goal is to provide forestry managers with the tools to protect old forests that have rich and complex ecosystems crucial to the survival of some species.

Some private liquor businesses in B.C. are facing tough times as job action has effectively shut down the provincial liquor distribution system.

Thousands of public service workers, including those at the Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) are in their seventh week of strike action as their union and their employer — the province — have come to an impasse over negotiating new terms, specifically higher wages, for their contracts.  Sukh Randhawa, owner-operator of Liquor 62 in Surrey, B.C., said the strike has had a significant impact on his private retail liquor store.

Alberta students hope for end to teachers' strike as classrooms remain empty

Many Alberta students are sleeping in these days, struggling with the feeling they should be doing something else instead. A provincewide teachers' strike, about to enter its second week, has meant some 750,000 children haven't had to set their morning alarms, catch buses or pack lunches.

The first formal bargaining meeting since the strike began Oct. 6 is set to take place Tuesday between the Alberta Teachers' Association and the government's bargaining team. Finance Minister Nate Horner said last week the province had received a complex counter-offer from the union and it would be the subject of Tuesday's talks.
