Dufferin Mall confirmed the incident happened at the Michael Hill store in a statement to CBC by the mall's marketing manager, Darren Neely. Police said the suspects smashed the storeβs display boxes but no injuries were reported. The suspects left the building and drove away from the mall in a dark-coloured vehicle, police say. N.B. researchers use satellite tech and AI to identify critical habitats in the wild
A New Brunswick-led research project is using satellite imaging and artificial intelligence to find and predict where old forests are, in an effort to develop better management practices for the forestry sector.
Northern Hardwoods Research Institute is leading the project, with funding from the Canadian Space Agency, from its Edmundston facility. The team will use data from satellites that fly over the same forested area each week. Gaetan Pelletier is the institute's executive director. He said the goal is to provide forestry managers with the tools to protect old forests that have rich and complex ecosystems crucial to the survival of some species.

Some private liquor businesses in B.C. are facing tough times as job action has effectively shut down the provincial liquor distribution system.
Thousands of public service workers, including those at the Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) are in their seventh week of strike action as their union and their employer β the province β have come to an impasse over negotiating new terms, specifically higher wages, for their contracts. Sukh Randhawa, owner-operator of Liquor 62 in Surrey, B.C., said the strike has had a significant impact on his private retail liquor store.

Alberta students hope for end to teachers' strike as classrooms remain empty
Many Alberta students are sleeping in these days, struggling with the feeling they should be doing something else instead. A provincewide teachers' strike, about to enter its second week, has meant some 750,000 children haven't had to set their morning alarms, catch buses or pack lunches.
The first formal bargaining meeting since the strike began Oct. 6 is set to take place Tuesday between the Alberta Teachers' Association and the government's bargaining team. Finance Minister Nate Horner said last week the province had received a complex counter-offer from the union and it would be the subject of Tuesday's talks.

New record price for gold means new and expanded mines in northern Ontario
Gold is glittering even more these days, hitting a record price of $4,000 US per ounce. The steadily climbing price in recent years has already seen boom times for gold towns in northeastern Ontario and the opening of new mines.
Hoffman, the CEO of the Soar Financial Group, said the mining industry is so accustomed to the boom-bust cycles, it's been tough for them to trust that gold prices won't crash back down.

Heavy storms, power outages across Saskatchewan on Thanksgiving weekend
Much of southern and central Saskatchewan was blanked in rain and snow on Sunday, with several communities in the provinceβs east central region losing power.
SaskPower spokesperson Scott McGregor said that about 8,500 customers lost power on Sunday. As of Monday morning about 500 people remained without power. McGregor said the heavy snow, which turned to ice, was responsible for many of the outages. People should not approach any downed power lines if they come across them, McGregor said, because it can be difficult to know if power is still running through them.

Cambridge's city hall reopens to the public after 3-week closure
Cambridge's city hall will reopen to the public on Tuesday after a three-week closure.
City hall was closed and council meetings were held online after "persistent disruptive behaviour" from a member of the public, the city said in a release late Monday. "The ongoing incidents included threating remarks, inappropriate conduct on city property, aggressively pursuing contact with staff and council, and gaining access to restricted areas of city buildings more than once."

Edmontonβs next city council will have to get creative balancing goals and taxes, former mayor says
Edmontonβs next city council may have to weigh peopleβs desire to keep taxes low, while not sacrificing certain services.
In recent polling done for CBC News by Janet Brown Opinion Research, many respondents reported wanting council to pursue goals like improving snow clearing, maintaining roads, dealing with crime and addressing homelessness β but they also indicated they donβt want to pay more for it. Election day is less than a week away, and some former city politicians say the survey responses suggest the incoming council might need to get creative.

Man pleads guilty to 2nd-degree murder in strangling of his wife
An Ottawa man has pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of his wife, and has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance to apply for parole for 14 years.
Court heard Tuesday that 61-year-old Robert Rus called 911 the evening of April 5 after strangling his wife, 60-year-old Brenda Rus. He told the dispatcher what he had done, then smoked a cigarette and drank a beer while waiting for police to arrive at their home in Barrhaven. Robert had tried to stab Brenda with a knife he'd grabbed from their kitchen. Brenda fought back and managed to slap it out of his hand before he strangled her. In his interview with homicide unit Sgt. Anik St-Amour he said he had intended to kill her, and that he had no regrets.

Community leaders and advocates in Hamilton ask province to fund education rather than policing in schools
A group of local advocates and representatives gathered in Hamilton Tuesday to speak against having police in schools and in favour of more funding for public education.
βFund our schools, not policing in our schools,β Andrea VΓ‘squez JimΓ©nez, director of Policing-Free Schools said outside City Hall. βRather than addressing the root causes [of violence], including the systemic chronic underfunding of education β¦ the Ford government chooses to siphon funds out of our schools and communities.β She said her coalition is working internationally to push back against policing in schools, including in Ontario where the provincial government introduced a bill that could bring police into public schools. Policing-Free Schools is campaigning across Ontario and Hamilton was the seventh stop.

B.C. government's professional workers to expand strike after talks break down
Almost all of British Columbia's licensed professional workers are going on strike after contract talks broke down this week.
A statement from the Professional Employees Association (PEA) says it was clear during talks on Tuesday that the government wasn't prepared to improve its offer of a general wage increase of 3.5 per cent over a two-year agreement.
The statement was mistakenly sent out early by a public relations firm, ahead of the official announcement of the "major escalation" in strike action at a news conference scheduled for Thursday.

Keep an eye out for the northern lights on Thursday night
Thereβs a chance that Canada could be in for a light show Thursday night.
The sun has fired off three coronal mass ejections (CME) that are on their way toward Earth.
CMEs are large expulsions of particles from the sun that travel faster than normal on the solar wind. When those particles reach Earth, they interact with our magnetic field and can create beautiful northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis (or if youβre in the southern hemisphere, aurora australis).
