NASA launches satellite for mission to map water on the moon
A dishwasher-sized NASA satellite was launched into space from Florida on Wednesday to identify places on the moon's surface where water exists — for example, in the permanently shadowed craters at the lunar poles.
A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral carrying NASA's Lunar Trailblazer orbiter built by Lockheed Martin's space division. The satellite was a secondary payload onboard the rocket, with the primary one being a lunar lander named Athena for a mission led by American space exploration company Intuitive Machines.

Measles cases nearly double in Ontario over last 2 weeks, far surpassing last decade's total
Ontario is reporting 84 new measles cases over the last two weeks, nearly doubling the province's total count since an outbreak started in the autumn.
The new cases bring Ontario's total this year to 119 that were confirmed in a lab and 23 that are deemed "probable," far surpassing the 101 total infections recorded in the province between 2013 and 2023.
Almost all of the new cases are connected to an interprovincial outbreak that began in October, which has sickened 177 people in Ontario and also saw the virus spread in New Brunswick and Manitoba. Quebec has also reported an outbreak of 27 cases that began in December.

Alberta's $5.2B budget deficit could jump to $8.7B under worst-case tariff scenario
Alberta is forecasting it will end the next fiscal year with a $5.2 billion deficit but that could soar to $8.7 billion under a worst-case tariff scenario outlined in Thursday's provincial budget.
Finance Minister Nate Horner introduced the budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year amid great uncertainty for Alberta and Canada, just days before the U.S. tariffs are set to come into effect. "Alberta's government is making responsible, though difficult, decisions to fund the priorities of today," Horner said at a news conference prior to tabling the budget. "We must do the right things to ensure we remain steadfast in the face of oncoming headwinds."

Six illegal ride-hailing drivers fined more than $13K in one day, says Richmond RCMP
Mounties in Richmond, B.C., say a crackdown on illegal ride-hailing operators in the city has resulted in more than $13,000 in fines being issued to six drivers in one day. RCMP say officers have been working with the transport ministry to combat illegal ride-hailing operators who "pose a significant risk" to public safety. Police and transport officers used illegal apps to book rides in the Feb. 8 sting operation.
One operator who didn't have a driver's licence was fined $6,900, while others were fined for failing to display certificates, having the wrong class of driver's licence or operating without a business licence. Police say the vehicles were towed and stored with the fees charged to the drivers, and three of those fined were repeat offenders.

Ottawa elects 3 new faces including an extra Liberal MPP
Ottawans elected three new faces to the provincial legislature on Thursday, one of whom helped the Liberal Party of Ontario grab an extra seat at Queen's Park.
When the election was called, the Liberals held only nine seats across the entire province, and four of those were held by Ottawa Liberal MPPs. The party retained that quartet of seats on Thursday but also secured a fifth one in the formerly Conservative riding of Nepean thanks to Tyler Watt, a health-care worker.

Premier Scott Moe says all pipelines through Sask. are now pre-approved. Experts say that doesn't mean much
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says any pipeline projects that cross the province will now be considered "pre-approved."
While the proclamation is provocative, experts say it changes very little about the reality of building a pipeline in Canada.
"Materially this doesn't mean anything, right? This is essentially nonsense. So this is political discourse," said Amy Janzwood, an assistant professor of politics at McGill University in Montreal.
Professor Andrew Leach, an economist at the University of Alberta, agreed that Moe's comments are political theatre.

'This is insane!' B.C. man gets en-dolphin rush as pod joins him for skim on the ocean
Jerry McArthur, a B.C. entrepreneur, was riding his electric hydrofoil in Howe Sound when he was suddenly surrounded by about 100 dolphins. Capturing the moment on a 360-degree camera, he watched as they swam alongside and jumped around him for nearly 20 minutes. Vehicles could be trapped for weeks after Ottawa parking garage collapse
On Thursday evening, a representative of Indigo Park Canada Inc. sent an email on behalf of property owner GWL Realty Advisors cautioning people with vehicles inside the garage against expecting a quick retrieval.
"GWLRA (property owner) is working closely with the city, emergency crews and a local team of experts to address the situation, render the site safe, and allow for the removal of vehicles," the email said. "They do not anticipate being able to access vehicles on the property for at least one to two weeks and we will be in touch with regular updates as this work progresses." A section of the six-level parking garage, which spans Slater Street to Laurier Avenue W. just west of O'Connor Street, collapsed around 4:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Trump orders probe into U.S. lumber imports that could heap more tariffs onto Canada
U.S. President Donald Trump ordered a new trade investigation into lumber imports, potentially adding more tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber and other goods. The probe, under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, could extend to derivative products like furniture and must be completed within 270 days. Trump also directed steps to boost domestic lumber production by streamlining permits for harvesting on public lands and improving salvage efforts within 90 days.

Rural township sets limits on virtual council meetings, but not remote work
A township council in eastern Ontario has rolled back its own remote work privileges, but held off on doing the same for staff.
Councillors in Elizabethtown-Kitley, a largely rural township about 80 kilometres south of Ottawa, voted Monday to cap their virtual meetings at four per year, and prohibited virtual closed sessions over confidentiality concerns. The original motion would have scrapped virtual meetings entirely. Not all council members agreed with the move, however.
