Trump hikes lumber tariffs over fentanyl despite less than 1% crossing from Canada

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday ordered a new trade investigation that could heap more tariffs on imported lumber, adding to existing duties on Canadian softwood lumber and 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian and Mexican goods starting Tuesday. Trump claims it's an effort to curb the flow of fentanyl into the U.S., while less than one per cent of all fentanyl entering the U.S. comes from Canada.

Trump confirms he will impose 25% tariff on Canadian goods Tuesday

U.S. President Donald Trump says his long-threatened trade war is going ahead with tariffs on Canadian goods set to take effect just after midnight and there's nothing Canada can do to stop them.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the United States has been "a laughingstock for years and years" and he needs to take trade action against its continental neighbours.

The president has said he wants to punish Canada for a supposedly lax approach to drugs and migrants even though data shows a border crackdown is already producing results.

"Very importantly, tomorrow, tariffs, 25 per cent on Canada and 25 per cent on Mexico, and that will start. So, they're gonna have to have a tariff," Trump said.

Asked if there's anything Canada can do to try and hold off the tariffs, Trump said: "No room left for Mexico or Canada. They're all set, they go into effect tomorrow."

Canadian counter-tariffs set to go into force as Trump says he won't reverse course

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says a first tranche of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods will go into force at midnight if the U.S. goes ahead with blanket tariffs on Canadian imports.

"Our tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. trade action is withdrawn, and should U.S. tariffs not cease, we are in active and ongoing discussions with provinces and territories to pursue several non-tariff measures," Trudeau said in a statement late Monday. "While we urge the U.S. administration to reconsider their tariffs, Canada remains firm in standing up for our economy, our jobs, our workers, and for a fair deal."

Ontario rips up Starlink deal, plans to tax electricity in response to Trump trade war

Ontario will rip up its $100-million deal with Elon Musk's Starlink internet provider and U.S. companies will be banned from procurement contracts as part of the province's response to President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canadian goods.

Premier Doug Ford announced the measures Tuesday, adding he's warning lawmakers in New York, Michigan and Minnesota that if the tariffs "persist," Ontario will put a 25 per cent surcharge on electricity flowing into the states and potentially cut the flow off entirely.

Ontario supplies roughly 1.5 million customers in the northern states with electricity.

Trump wants to go back to 1913. Canadians and Americans will suffer the consequences

Canadians have taken Donald Trump's threats of trade action — now realized — very personally. Understandably and justifiably so.
But the American president's treatment of Ukraine — not to mention his administration's larger withholding of foreign aid — demonstrates that Canada is far from alone. This United States administration is not concerned much with the welfare of other nations or the people who live there.

Canada fights against 25% U.S. tariffs and braces for economic pain

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday that the justifications for U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs — including assertions around fentanyl — are bogus. 'So, we actually have to fold back on the one thing he has said repeatedly, that what he wants is to see a total collapse of the Canadian economy, because that'll make it easier to annex us, is the second half of his thought.'

Perennial uncertainty of tariffs looms over B.C.'s budget

The B.C. government's 2025/26 budget came as the province is constrained by the start of a trade war prompted by U.S. tariffs, but political watchers say B.C. has many unmet needs and also needs a long-term vision.

The budget projected a record deficit of $10.9 billion as the government committed to spending on core services and set aside billions in contingency funds on Tuesday, the same day that 25 per cent U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports went into effect. But while the record deficit came under fire from many pro-business groups, a political science professor says that the B.C. NDP government is in a tight position, and residents would have to get used to short-term commitments and diversification as the province tries to insulate itself from outside threats.

Alberta will stop buying American booze, step up efforts to buy Canadian in response to U.S. tariffs

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says the provincial government will avoid purchasing U.S. goods and services and launch an advertising campaign to help shoppers buy Canadian products while U.S tariffs persist.

"This economic attack on our country, combined with Mr. Trump's continued talk of using economic force to facilitate the annexation of our country, has broken trust between our two countries in a profound way," Smith said at a news conference in Medicine Hat, Alta., about 145 kilometres from the U.S. border. "It is a betrayal of a deep and abiding friendship."

Trump pausing tariffs on some Canadian goods until April 2

U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday he is pausing his tariffs on some Canadian goods until April 2, offering the country yet another reprieve from a punishing 25 per cent levy. Trump's actions are a welcome development, given just how damaging tariffs that big could be for the Canadian economy.

But the events of the last week show what Canada is in for over the next nearly four years: chaos, unpredictability and constantly moving goal posts from a White House that doesn't play by normal trade rules.

Soup company sees sales surge as shoppers buy Canadian to protest tariffs

Hearty soups, beans and chilis aren't the typical tools of rebellion, but for many Canadians the red maple leaf on cans from Sprague Foods has become a patriotic rallying point.

The family business in Belleville, Ont., is marking its 100th year. Its owners said in that time the biggest events they've had to weather are World War II, the COVID pandemic and now the U.S. tariffs. "This is a nationalistic version of shopping," said Keenan Sprague, vice president of the company and the fifth generation of the family to work there.
