Ex-minister Guthrie on 'probation,' barred from UCP caucus meetings after quitting cabinet

Former Alberta infrastructure minister Peter Guthrie is barred from attending UCP caucus meetings following his recent abrupt resignation, as part of a 30-day probation period he's been placed under.

Guthrie, who quit Premier Danielle Smith's cabinet in the wake of allegations about Alberta Health Services contracting, is still allowed to sit with United Conservative MLAs on the government side of the legislature chamber during this unusual probation. Guthrie, the MLA for Airdrie-Cochrane, declined an interview request, but he confirmed to CBC News that he's been barred since Feb. 26 from attending regular caucus meetings or government committees.

Feds relax some EI rules, provide $6B in business support as Trump makes new tariff threats

The federal government is launching a more than $6-billion aid package for businesses impacted by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs and relaxing some employment insurance (EI) rules to help workers.

Steven MacKinnon, Mary Ng and Rechie Valdez — the ministers of labour, international trade and small business — made the announcement Friday afternoon. "We have tried and tested tools to get our people through the toughest of crises and we will not hesitate to use them," MacKinnon said.

Region of Waterloo to meet with outdoor workers union Friday on day 5 of strike

After five days of stalled negotiations, the Region of Waterloo and the union representing outside regional workers are set to resume talks on Friday. Picket lines have been set up all week in front of Region of Waterloo International Airport. Tuesday another picket line was set up outside regional headquarters on Frederick Street in Kitchener while committee meetings were taking place.

The workers are represented by Local 1656 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). Those striking are outside workers, including working in departments like landfill, roads and water, and the airport. The strike started at 12:01 a.m. Monday. The union says it's calling for higher wages to keep up with the rising cost of living.

YMCA to keep 180 Argyle Ave., 2 years after listing for sale

The YMCA announced this week that it will remain in its flagship building in Ottawa at 180 Argyle Ave. for the next five years, more than two years after announcing it was selling the property. 

Community services are more important than ever, and now is not the time to sell commercial property, according to Trevor McAlmont, president and CEO of the YMCA for the National Capital Region. "Our plan is to stay here, stay focusing on the community in downtown and start to focus on this asset which means so much to stakeholders," McAlmont told CBC Radio's All In A Day this week.

All Senate seats filled after PM announces 5 more appointments

With just days to go until Prime Minister Justin Trudeau leaves federal politics, his office says five new appointments have now filled all the vacancies in the 105-seat Senate.

The Prime Minister's Office said in a news release that the Governor General has appointed former Moncton mayor Dawn Arnold for New Brunswick and former MLA Tony Ince for Nova Scotia. Non-profit executive Katherine Hay, charity CEO Farah Mohamed and former provincial politician Sandra Pupatello have been appointed for Ontario.

RCMP announce murder charge in 2021 slaying of 52-year-old man in small B.C. town

Mounties in B.C. say a 64-year-old Vancouver man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of a man in 70 Mile House in December 2021.

B.C. RCMP say 52-year-old The-Thanh (Ted) Nguyen was found unresponsive at a home in the small community on Dec. 26, 2021, and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. Police say Nguyen died at the scene after being found outside an outbuilding on a property on Komori Road. A suspect was later arrested in the community of Clinton, B.C., about 25 kilometres south of 70 Mile House in the province's Cariboo region.

Hamilton father of two killed in Waterdown home, police say

A 55-year-old man is the city's third homicide victim this year, Hamilton police said Friday. Dirk Nyhuis, often called Jeff by friends and family, died of a gunshot in his Waterdown home this past week, Det. Sgt. David Brewster said in a news conference. 

On Thursday, a concerned friend went to check on Nyhuis after not hearing from him for a while, police said. The friend called police and first responders found Nyhuis dead in his home near Dundas Street E. and Spring Creek Drive.

Court injunction sought against Alberta government's new transgender youth health care legislation

Lawyers for two LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations are in court Monday for the first step in their fight against the Alberta government's transgender law that prevents doctors from providing gender-affirming treatments, including puberty blockers and hormone therapy for youths under the age of 16.

Egale Canada and Alberta's Skipping Stone Foundation, joined by the families of five gender-diverse Alberta youths, launched the legal action against the provincial government in December after Bill 26 received royal assent. It has not yet been proclaimed.

The groups are challenging the constitutionality of the bill and seeking an injunction that would protect youth access to the health care in question while the courts decide whether the law is constitutional.

Egale has called the Alberta government's actions "unprecedented" and " sweeping attack on the rights, safety and freedoms of 2SLGBTQI people in Alberta."

Archdiocese of St. Boniface faces another lawsuit alleging sexual assault by former priest

The Archdiocese of St. Boniface in the Roman Catholic Church is being sued by a man who says he was sexually assaulted by a former priest at the church in the village of Somerset, Man., in the 1970s.

The lawsuit says a priest named Rene Touchette, who is now deceased, was convicted of sexual assault against the plaintiff and other victims from Somerset in or around December 1993. The plaintiff is now in his 60s and his statement of claim filed March 3 in Manitoba Court of King's Bench says that sexual assaults took place between 1972 and 1980 when the plaintiff was about 13 to 21 years old.

Trump threatens Ontario 'will pay a financial price' for levy on U.S.-bound electricity

U.S. President Donald Trump issued numerous threats aimed at Ontario and Canada on Tuesday after the province imposed a surcharge on electricity flowing south of the border.

In a series of meandering posts to his Truth Social platform, Trump said Ontario "will pay a financial price for this so big that it will be read about in History Books for many years to come!"

He went on to accuse Canada of "stooping so low as to use ELECTRICITY, that so affects the life of innocent people, as a bargaining chip and threat" in the trade war his administration started.

Those comments came shortly after an earlier post in which Trump said he'll double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum starting Wednesday in response to Ontario's electricity levy.

"Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on "Electricity" coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA," Trump wrote.
