Ontario developer accused of extracting $18M from home buyers

An Ontario developer is accused of coercing 142 purchasers of pre-construction projects to pay more money for the same homes they purchased up to two years earlier — claims that are now the subject of a disciplinary committee hearing referred by the province's regulatory authority.

According to a statement of allegations listed on the Home Construction Regulatory Authority (HCRA) website, purchasers were told by Briarwood Development Group that they'd have to sign a release forfeiting their homes if they didn't agree to pay the additional amounts. It's alleged the company extracted more than $18 million from the buyers.

The allegations centre around pre-construction homes in the Ontario communities of Stayner, Angus, Quinte West and Georgina. The claims are that Briarwood demanded increases that ranged from $16,000 for an Angus project home to $320,000 for a Stayner project home.

Sask. government launches crisis operations centre in response to drug overdoses

The Saskatchewan government is stepping in to organize a response to a spike in overdoses in Saskatoon.  The Saskatoon Fire Department reported responding to 67 overdoses and one suspicious death from March 9 to March 11.

On Wednesday, the government activated the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) in response to the ongoing crisis. The province says the move will enhance co-ordination between health organizations and reduce gaps in care.

Carney to move key carbon tax defender to new cabinet role: source

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault will be given a new portfolio in Mark Carney's cabinet, a source with knowledge of the decision told Radio-Canada.

The Montreal MP and former Greenpeace activist, who has held the portfolio since 2021, will instead be responsible for various files, said the source, who was not authorized to speak on the record.

However, he will no longer be the face of the fight against climate change.

Guilbeault learned the news earlier this week, the source said.

Canada's next prime minister appears intent on marking a clear break with the Trudeau-era consumer carbon tax, a policy Guilbeault, until recently, aggressively defended. That made him a polarizing minister in parts of the country, and he often faced off against Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.

Carney, once a proponent of carbon pricing, campaigned on dropping the carbon tax and repeated the promise in his acceptance speech Monday.

Ontario measles cases more than double over last 2 weeks, 31 hospitalizations reported

Ontario is seeing a massive surge in measles cases as an ongoing outbreak spreads in the province among mostly unvaccinated people.

Public Health Ontario is reporting 372 total cases since an outbreak began on Oct. 28, 2024. That's a jump of 195 cases since the agency's last report on Feb. 27. The spread has resulted in 31 hospitalizations, including one child who required intensive care. Of those who were hospitalized, 30 were unvaccinated and one person's immunization status was unknown.

Mother of Edmonton homicide victim feels blindsided as accused killer granted bail

The mother of an Edmonton woman killed last September says she was blindsided to learn the man accused in her daughter's homicide has been granted bail.

Collin Boucher-Gionet, 34, charged with second-degree murder and indignity to human remains in the death of his girlfriend Aylissa Rovere, has been granted release on house arrest.

Boucher-Gionet has a criminal history with the courts and was on probation at the time of the alleged killing.

Rovere's mother, Jodi Dunn, said she can't fathom why Boucher-Gionet has been granted additional freedoms.

"He's up for murder and to release someone like him, who has been in trouble before, it's just another slap on the wrist," Dunn said. "It doesn't make sense."

Homicide unit investigating Barrhaven death, 1 man arrested

One man has been arrested in connection to the death of a person Friday evening in Barrhaven, and the Ottawa Police Service (OPS)  homicide unit is investigating.

Emergency crews responded to a call at 8:10 p.m. Friday on the 200 block of Longfields Drive, police said in a post on X. First responders found one person with serious injuries who died shortly after they were found, OPS said.
