Ontario's police watchdog is investigating a collision west of London on Saturday that left one person in hospital, Ontario Provincial Police say.
The two-vehicle crash happened as the OPP investigated a suspected stolen vehicle, police said, adding that the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was later notified and invoked its mandate. Canada's counter-tariffs are hurting small businesses. Even so, many still support them
Troyhann Santos checks the federal government's latest list of counter-tariffs and makes a crushing discovery. Starting immediately, she'll have to pay a 25 per cent tariff on most merchandise coming into her lacrosse equipment store, Lax Shack, in Pickering, Ont.
"To get hit with something like this is terrifying," said Santos. "It's a terrible gut punch."
Billions of dollars and thousands of jobs are on the line as Canadian businesses grapple with U.S. President Trump's tariffs, the bulk of which are set to take effect on April 2.
Now, some businesses unaffected by Trump's tariffs are learning that they won't emerge unscathed from the trade war, because goods they import from the U.S. are getting hit with Canada's counter-tariffs.
The problem is especially concerning for small businesses, which often don't have deep pockets to help them weather the storm.
Last week, the federal government imposed its first round of 25 per cent retaliatory tariffs on $30 billion worth of American goods, such as many types of food and appliances.

Jagmeet Singh says NDP would cancel F-35 contract and build fighter jets in Canada
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced plans to cancel Canadaβs contract to buy 88 U.S.-built F-35s from Lockheed Martin and instead seek companies to build fighter jets within Canada. Singh argues this approach would enhance national security and create jobs. The proposal comes as Canada reconsiders its F-35 purchase amid tensions with the U.S. and threats from President Donald Trump to annex Canada by economic force. Defense experts warn Singhβs plan could be costly and time-consuming.

B.C.'s chief coroner looks at new approach to tackling the overdose crisis
Nine years after the start of a public health emergency that has killed more than 16,000 people, B.C.'s new chief coroner is taking on the crisis in a new way β an approach he says is, perhaps, a little less political than his predecessor.
Dr. Jatinder Baidwan, who goes by Taj, says he plans to take less of an advocacy role compared to Lisa Lapointe, who often pointed sharp criticism at the government when she disagreed with its approach on preventing drug deaths. "As the chief coroner, it's my responsibility not to advocate for any particular group out there. But to advocate for all British Columbians β¦ for those who have died," said Baidwain, who started his five-year term in August.

Ex-University of Waterloo student sentenced to 11 years in prison for classroom stabbings
The former University of Waterloo, Ont., student who pleaded guilty to a stabbing rampage in a gender-studies class in 2023 on Monday was sentenced to 11 years in prison when he appeared in a Kitchener court.
Geovanny Villalba-Aleman, 25, will not be charged with terrorism, but the judge called his actions a "particularly grave hate crime."
In June 2024, he pleaded guilty to two charges of aggravated assault and one charge each of assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon.
Villalba-Aleman also faced possible terrorism charges, but Justice Frances Brennan said Monday those were no longer being considered because "his actions were not ideologically motivated."
"This is a particularly grave hate crime. Mr. Villalba-Aleman planned his attack, he posted a boastful and hateful statement of his intentions and committed the offence in a university classroom, no doubt to draw widespread attention to his crime," Brennan said as part of his sentencing hearing.
"This was not an impulsive act by any definition. Mr. Villalba-Aleman was deliberate and calculated. He intended to inflict, and did inflict, widespread fear."

The Conservative Party announced that journalists will not be allowed to travel with leader Pierre Poilievre on his campaign plane and bus during the upcoming election, breaking a decades-long tradition of reporters embedding with candidates. OCDSB looking to cut 150 full-time jobs
Ottawa's largest school board plans to cut 150 full-time positions by the next school year as it faces both a slight drop in kindergarten enrolment and a projected $20-million budget shortfall.
The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) expects to find savings of $15.9 million in salaries and benefits by shedding 79.5 non-academic positions, plus another 70 teachers, principals and vice-principals. Staffing makes up 81 per cent of the board's $1.2-billion operating budget, which trustees must approve by the end of June. Setting staffing levels is one of the first steps in crafting that budget.

Conservatives won't allow reporters to travel with Poilievre during upcoming election
The Conservative national campaign director told media outlets Tuesday their journalists won't be allowed to travel with leader Pierre Poilievre on his campaign plane and bus during the upcoming election, ending a decades-old tradition of reporters embedding with a prospective candidate to lead the country.
There is no recent precedent for a major federal party barring reporters, producers, camera operators and broadcast technicians from travelling with a leader during a national election campaign.
In the most recent federal campaigns in 2019 and 2021, for example, major broadcasters, including CBC/Radio-Canada, CTV and Global, a number of print outlets and the wire service, The Canadian Press, had journalists with past Conservative leaders Andrew Scheer and Erin O'Toole throughout the campaign.
Those journalists documented the leaders' announcements, asked questions at news conferences, made connections with staff members and met voters along the campaign trail as part of an effort to bring election stories to Canadians.
