B.C.'s chief coroner looks at new approach to tackling the overdose crisis
Nine years after the start of a public health emergency that has killed more than 16,000 people, B.C.'s new chief coroner is taking on the crisis in a new way β an approach he says is, perhaps, a little less political than his predecessor.
Dr. Jatinder Baidwan, who goes by Taj, says he plans to take less of an advocacy role compared to Lisa Lapointe, who often pointed sharp criticism at the government when she disagreed with its approach on preventing drug deaths. "As the chief coroner, it's my responsibility not to advocate for any particular group out there. But to advocate for all British Columbians β¦ for those who have died," said Baidwain, who started his five-year term in August.

Ex-University of Waterloo student sentenced to 11 years in prison for classroom stabbings
The former University of Waterloo, Ont., student who pleaded guilty to a stabbing rampage in a gender-studies class in 2023 on Monday was sentenced to 11 years in prison when he appeared in a Kitchener court.
Geovanny Villalba-Aleman, 25, will not be charged with terrorism, but the judge called his actions a "particularly grave hate crime."
In June 2024, he pleaded guilty to two charges of aggravated assault and one charge each of assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon.
Villalba-Aleman also faced possible terrorism charges, but Justice Frances Brennan said Monday those were no longer being considered because "his actions were not ideologically motivated."
"This is a particularly grave hate crime. Mr. Villalba-Aleman planned his attack, he posted a boastful and hateful statement of his intentions and committed the offence in a university classroom, no doubt to draw widespread attention to his crime," Brennan said as part of his sentencing hearing.
"This was not an impulsive act by any definition. Mr. Villalba-Aleman was deliberate and calculated. He intended to inflict, and did inflict, widespread fear."

Conservatives won't allow reporters to travel with Poilievre during upcoming election
The Conservative Party announced that journalists will not be allowed to travel with leader Pierre Poilievre on his campaign plane and bus during the upcoming election, breaking a decades-long tradition of reporters embedding with candidates. This decision marks a significant departure from previous federal campaigns in 2019 and 2021, where media outlets, including CBC, CTV, Global, and The Canadian Press, accompanied Conservative leaders Andrew Scheer and Erin O'Toole to provide election coverage.

OCDSB looking to cut 150 full-time jobs
Ottawa's largest school board plans to cut 150 full-time positions by the next school year as it faces both a slight drop in kindergarten enrolment and a projected $20-million budget shortfall.
The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) expects to find savings of $15.9 million in salaries and benefits by shedding 79.5 non-academic positions, plus another 70 teachers, principals and vice-principals. Staffing makes up 81 per cent of the board's $1.2-billion operating budget, which trustees must approve by the end of June. Setting staffing levels is one of the first steps in crafting that budget.

Conservatives won't allow reporters to travel with Poilievre during upcoming election
The Conservative national campaign director told media outlets Tuesday their journalists won't be allowed to travel with leader Pierre Poilievre on his campaign plane and bus during the upcoming election, ending a decades-old tradition of reporters embedding with a prospective candidate to lead the country.
There is no recent precedent for a major federal party barring reporters, producers, camera operators and broadcast technicians from travelling with a leader during a national election campaign.
In the most recent federal campaigns in 2019 and 2021, for example, major broadcasters, including CBC/Radio-Canada, CTV and Global, a number of print outlets and the wire service, The Canadian Press, had journalists with past Conservative leaders Andrew Scheer and Erin O'Toole throughout the campaign.
Those journalists documented the leaders' announcements, asked questions at news conferences, made connections with staff members and met voters along the campaign trail as part of an effort to bring election stories to Canadians.

B.C. company apologizes for '51st state' reference in ad following online outrage
A Richmond, B.C., company has apologized after an advertisement in a transit station drew online flak for its reference to the "51st state" amid public annexation threats by the U.S. president.
Vitamin company Herbaland's ad was featured at the Vancouver City Centre SkyTrain station. The mural displayed a selection of the company's products set against a maple leaf and large text that read, "Herbaland proudly made in (the 51st state) Canada." In it, "(the 51st state)" is crossed out in white. Herbaland's vitamin gummies are made in Richmond, a Metro Vancouver suburb, and its website bills itself as Canada's largest nutritional gummy producer.

Delta plane that crashed at Pearson airport was travelling at high rate of descent, prelim report suggests
The proximity warning system aboard the Delta Air Lines flight that crashed at Pearson airport last month sent an alert indicating a high rate of descent less than three seconds before the plane touched down, according to a preliminary report.
The report, released Thursday, is part of an ongoing investigation by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada into the Feb. 17 crash, which sent 21 people to hospital.
"It is too early to draw conclusions as to the causes of this accident," the board said in a news release Thursday. "A full investigation report, which will include the TSB's analysis into why the accident happened and the Board's findings, will be released in due course."
The flight, operated by Delta Air Lines subsidiary Endeavour Air, took off from Minneapolis with 76 passengers, two flight crew members and two cabin crew members. The aircraft was a CL-600-2D24 (Regional Jet Series 900) manufactured by Bombardier Inc. in 2008.
