This election is about Donald Trump β and a lot more
On June 16, 2015, Justin Trudeau, then leader of the Liberal Party, announced plans for political reform, including changing Canadaβs electoral system. However, the more impactful event occurred in New York when Donald Trump launched his presidential campaign with controversial rhetoric about immigration and promises to "make America great again." Despite various chances to reject him, Trump was re-elected last fall for a second term. His presidency continues to have significant implications for Canada, especially concerning sovereignty, climate issues, and affordability challenges.

Guelph police warn residents to lock bikes, even at home, after recent thefts
Recent bicycle thefts in Guelph have police reminding residents how they can prevent their bikes from being stolen, even from their own garages.
Guelph police arrested three people this week in connection to the theft of three high-end bicycles from a garage in a home near Norfolk Street and Liverpool Street. Guelph Police Service Spokesperson Scott Tracey recommends people secure their bikes, even if they think they're safe.

Navigating trade tricky in border city of Lloydminster, which straddles two provinces
Energy sizzles through the air at Diamond 7 Meats, a small meat processor in Saskatchewan.
One employee ties roasts with string while another churns out pork sausages and a third wraps them in red packing paper.
But there is one thing that can make doing business tricky: an invisible line called the provincial border.
The business sits right on the edge of Lloydminster, Sask., about 150 metres from the border with Alberta. It's so close that president Robert Lundquist can see it from the front door of the business.
But the company cannot sell their products in nearby Alberta.

Sask. walks back ban on American-branded beer made in Canada
Saskatchewan has reversed its decision to stop selling American-branded alcohol made in Canada after industry backlash. The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) initially banned 54 brands, including Bud Light and Blue Moon, in response to U.S. tariffs. However, industry leaders argued that many of these brands are brewed in Canada despite having U.S. headquarters, leading to the policy reversal.

3 heli-skiers killed in southeastern B.C. avalanche, RCMP says
Three heli-skiers were killed Monday after an avalanche in southeastern B.C. swept them away, according to RCMP.
The RCMP said the avalanche occurred in the village of Kaslo, on the east side of Kootenay Lake, around 1 p.m. PT.
"Two groups of skiers had just finished skiing the bowl and were waiting in a staging area below the tree line of Clute Creek water shed. A transport helicopter was nearing the group when the pilot observed an avalanche and sounded the siren," the RCMP said in a news release.
One group of skiers was able to get out of the way but the other group of four was swept away into the tree line, RCMP said.

Carney's green funds at Brookfield used Bermuda tax haven to attract investors
In his time at Brookfield Asset Management, Liberal Leader Mark Carney personally co-chaired two investment funds dedicated to the transition to a net-zero carbon economy, worth a total of $25 billion.
Those funds were registered in Bermuda, among other locations, allowing investors to benefit from significant tax advantages, according to information obtained by Radio-Canada.
The funds created while Carney was on Brookfield's board of directors are the Brookfield Global Transition Fund ($15 billion) and the Brookfield Global Transition Fund II ($10 billion), launched in 2021 and 2024 respectively.
According to the Ontario Business Registry, the funds were registered in Bermuda under the names of BGTF Bermuda GP Ltd. and BGTF II Bermuda GP Ltd.
In both cases, the provincial registry indicates that the "governing jurisdiction" for the corporations is located in Bermuda.

Trump going ahead with 25% tariffs on autos
U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on all finished vehicle imports starting April 3, with auto parts to follow, aiming to pressure companies into moving production to the U.S. The move threatens Canadaβs auto sector, a key manufacturing industry and major U.S. trade partner. Trump's goal, stated from the Oval Office, is to make it so difficult for exporters that they relocate operations to the U.S. The tariffs could have severe economic consequences, particularly for Canadian workers dependent on the auto trade.

Free naloxone nasal spray needed to deal with Sask. overdose spike, say front-line groups
An alarming spike in overdoses in Saskatoon has some front-line workers calling on the Saskatchewan government to expand its Take Home Naloxone program to include the more user-friendly nasal spray, not just injection kits.
Free naloxone nasal spray is offered in Ontario, Quebec, the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Unlike the more invasive injectable version, the overdose-reversing medication is sprayed directly into the nose. "Some people just are not going to feel comfortable using the needles and if that is something that stops somebody from using naloxone, or carrying naloxone, then that's a barrier that we should get rid of," Sarah Kozusko, pharmacy manager at Queen City Wellness in Regina, said.

Trump going ahead with 25% tariffs on autos
U.S. President Donald Trump has levelled what may be his most devastating tariffs yet, hitting a sizable chunk of the cross-border auto trade and potentially all of it at a later date.
A new 25 per cent duty will strike all finished vehicles imported into the United States starting on April 3, then some parts within weeks and perhaps all parts eventually.
It's a frightening prospect for hundreds of thousands of Canadians whose jobs are connected to the auto sector β the largest manufacturing industry in Canada and second-largest source of exports to the U.S. after oil.
Amid the confusing tangle of tariffs, one goal stands out with striking clarity. Trump laid it bare from the Oval Office as he announced the measures.
His clear objective? Make life so difficult for companies that export to the U.S. that they simply give up and move production lines there.

Freezing rain possible in Toronto Friday, Saturday nights as Environment Canada revises forecast
Environment Canada has revised its weather statement for Toronto, removing earlier warnings of a "potent" ice storm. Instead, freezing rain is now a possibility for Friday and Saturday nights, with potential ice accretions of 3-5 mm. Precipitation will start as rain Friday afternoon, possibly turning to freezing rain if temperatures drop slightly. Any lingering precipitation on Saturday morning will turn to showers as temperatures rise. Earlier warnings about power outages and hazardous conditions have been toned down, but authorities still advise caution for drivers.
