3 heli-skiers killed in southeastern B.C. avalanche, RCMP says

Three heli-skiers were killed Monday after an avalanche in southeastern B.C. swept them away, according to RCMP.

The RCMP said the avalanche occurred in the village of Kaslo, on the east side of Kootenay Lake, around 1 p.m. PT.

"Two groups of skiers had just finished skiing the bowl and were waiting in a staging area below the tree line of Clute Creek water shed. A transport helicopter was nearing the group when the pilot observed an avalanche and sounded the siren," the RCMP said in a news release.

One group of skiers was able to get out of the way but the other group of four was swept away into the tree line, RCMP said.

Carney's green funds at Brookfield used Bermuda tax haven to attract investors

In his time at Brookfield Asset Management, Liberal Leader Mark Carney personally co-chaired two investment funds dedicated to the transition to a net-zero carbon economy, worth a total of $25 billion.

Those funds were registered in Bermuda, among other locations, allowing investors to benefit from significant tax advantages, according to information obtained by Radio-Canada.

The funds created while Carney was on Brookfield's board of directors are the Brookfield Global Transition Fund ($15 billion) and the Brookfield Global Transition Fund II ($10 billion), launched in 2021 and 2024 respectively.

According to the Ontario Business Registry, the funds were registered in Bermuda under the names of BGTF Bermuda GP Ltd. and BGTF II Bermuda GP Ltd.

In both cases, the provincial registry indicates that the "governing jurisdiction" for the corporations is located in Bermuda.

An alarming spike in overdoses in Saskatoon has some front-line workers calling on the Saskatchewan government to expand its Take Home Naloxone program to include the more user-friendly nasal spray, not just injection kits.

Free naloxone nasal spray is offered in Ontario, Quebec, the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Unlike the more invasive injectable version, the overdose-reversing medication is sprayed directly into the nose. "Some people just are not going to feel comfortable using the needles and if that is something that stops somebody from using naloxone, or carrying naloxone, then that's a barrier that we should get rid of," Sarah Kozusko, pharmacy manager at Queen City Wellness in Regina, said.

U.S. President Donald Trump has levelled what may be his most devastating tariffs yet, hitting a sizable chunk of the cross-border auto trade and potentially all of it at a later date.

A new 25 per cent duty will strike all finished vehicles imported into the United States starting on April 3, then some parts within weeks and perhaps all parts eventually.

It's a frightening prospect for hundreds of thousands of Canadians whose jobs are connected to the auto sector — the largest manufacturing industry in Canada and second-largest source of exports to the U.S. after oil.

Amid the confusing tangle of tariffs, one goal stands out with striking clarity. Trump laid it bare from the Oval Office as he announced the measures.

His clear objective? Make life so difficult for companies that export to the U.S. that they simply give up and move production lines there.

Rural schools are closed Friday in Thunder Bay, Ont., and all school bus routes are cancelled in the city as a snow storm makes it way through the region.

Environment Canada has issued multiple weather alerts for the northwest, including snowfall warnings for Thunder Bay, Kenora, Dryden and Fort Frances areas. Snowfall is expected to continue through to this evening. The weather agency said total snowfall accumulations of 15 to 25 centimetres is expected. There's also a risk of freezing rain near the Minnesota border.

Canadian researchers are being asked politically charged questions when trying to secure U.S. grants

Academic researchers are used to filing out forms when applying for grants, but Canadian scholars have expressed shock over a new questionnaire they are receiving when applying for funding issued in part or wholly by the U.S. government.

"Can you confirm that this is no DEI project or DEI elements of the project?" asks one question, with an accompanying link to U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order to nix funding from government programs dealing with diversity, equity and inclusion.

"Can you confirm this is not a climate or "environmental justice" project or include such elements?" asks another.

Yet another asks if a project "defends women from gender ideology" — another reference to a Trump executive order.

Peter McInnis, President of Canadian Association of University Teachers, which represents 72,000 staff across more than 125 institutions, says they've been receiving messages about what he says is "most unusual, not only just to receive a questionnaire at all, but this one was clearly screening for ideological questions."
