Legal group apologizes after cancellation of noted Syrian Canadian's speech sparks 'profound' reaction
The Advocates' Society, a major Canadian legal group, has apologized after canceling a keynote speech by Syrian Canadian entrepreneur Tareq Hadhad, founder of Peace by Chocolate. The decision, made due to concerns from some members about Hadhadβs stance on Israel's war in Gaza, sparked strong criticism. In a statement, the society acknowledged the backlash, admitted to a lack of diverse consultation, and said it regrets the harm caused, stating it had not fully upheld its mission and core values.

Decades-old secrets surface as former North Vancouver teacher found guilty of sexual offences
The victims are all middle-aged men now: urban planners, computer scientists, technology salespeople β men with jobs, titles and families of their own.
But long-ago they were all boys β Grade 6 students who had the misfortune to fall under the gaze of a popular elementary school teacher named Brian Meilicke Moore, a predator who dazzled them with ski trips, beer and "games" played in the dark that scarred them for life.
Those decades-old secrets spilled out in North Vancouver Provincial Court this week as a judge found the now-85-year-old Moore guilty of nine historic sexual offences.

Amanda Maloney of Moose Creek, Ont., was killed on the morning of March 29 in a three-vehicle collision on Highway 138 β a single-lane highway between Highway 417 and Cornwall. Cara Sabourin, a friend of Maloney's, started the petition calling for more turning lanes, traffic cycles, traffic lights and better lighting on that route.

What did homeowners do with green rebates, and did they make a difference?
The federal government provided $2.6 billion for heat pumps, solar panels, insulation and other green upgrades to Canadians' homes through the Canada Greener Homes Grant. But what difference did that actually make?
A new report released this week by the non-profit Green Communities Canada suggests the program didn't do enough to meet Canada's targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
That's because "the savings aren't deep enough and because we're not doing enough retrofits," said Kai Millyard, the group's energy manager and co-author of the report.

About 55,000 customers remain without power after Ontario ice storms: Hydro One
About 55,000 Ontarians are without power Monday as Hydro One's 4,800 crew members make efforts to get the lights back on after last week's ice storm.
The provincial utility said Sunday morning that the number of customers had dropped to 69,000 as the utility made progress on the prolonged ice storm outages, but that number of outages grew to over 80,000 on Sunday evening. The provincial utility says the weather is favourable and its helicopters and drones are back in the air to help survey the damage.

Security officials report a Beijing-linked online operation is targeting Carney
Federal security officials say they've found an online information operation linked to the Chinese government that has targeted Liberal Leader Mark Carney.
The Security and Intelligence Threats to Elections Task Force says it traced the operation to Youli-Youmian, the most popular news account on the social media platform WeChat.
Intelligence reports link the Youli-Youmian account to the Chinese Communist Party's central political and legal affairs commission.
Federal officials say "contrasting narratives" were spread on WeChat "amplifying" Carney's stance on the United States and targeting his experience and credentials.
The task force reports seeing large increases in what it calls "co-ordinated, inauthentic" online behaviour on March 10 β before the federal election was called β and again during the writ period on March 25.
