Suspect in fatal Calgary hit and run gets bail but banned from commercial driving

A Saskatoon truck driver charged with hit and run after a woman was killed on a busy Calgary highway in a cruel chain-reaction crash has been released on bail. But Gaganpreet Singh is prohibited from commercial driving until his case is resolved.

The 26-year-old is charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident and failing to remain at the scene of an accident in which a death ensues.

4 men charged with 1st-degree murder in Val-des-Monts attack

Four men are now facing first-degree murder charges after being arrested late last year following a violent attack in Val-des-Monts, Que.

Éric Trudel, 52, Sylvain Trépanier, 48, Alexandre Paré, 30, and Louis Charron, 35, have been charged with the murder of 60-year-old Janet Larabie, who was found dead the day after the attack on Nov. 30. Police also found a seriously injured man at the scene. The men were initially charged with two counts of kidnapping and one count of aggravated assault. The first-degree murder charges were added during a recent appearance by the men at the Gatineau courthouse.

Sunterra takes steps toward creditor protection while U.S. subsidiaries face legal scrutiny

Several businesses under the Sunterra banner, known in Alberta for its agriculture and high-end grocery operations, have taken steps toward creditor protection as three of its U.S. subsidiaries face legal and financial scrutiny. 

Late last month, Sunterra Quality Food Markets, Sunterra Food Corporation, Sunterra Farms, Trochu Meat Processors and Sunwold Farms all filed notices under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, a process that gives financially strained companies 30 days of protection from creditors while they come up with a plan to restructure. Trochu is where Sunterra processes its pork in Alberta. The facility was damaged in a fire last summer and has not yet reopened.

Former B.C. United MLA courts centrist voters with new political party

Former MLA Karin Kirkpatrick has launched a new political party, Centre B.C., after abandoning attempts to get Kevin Falcon to step down as leader of B.C. United, formerly B.C. Liberals. 
Kirkpatrick said she was left politically homeless when Falcon withdrew B.C. United from last year's provincial election campaign — and so were many political centrists like her. "There are a lot of federal Liberals who were homeless and voted for the NDP in the last election. We're giving them an opportunity to come back to us," Kirkpatrick told CBC News during a visit to Victoria, accompanied by her 22-year-old daughter.

97 drivers tested positive for cannabis during enforcement campaign: Winnipeg police

Results from a recent traffic enforcement campaign show more needs to be done to educate Winnipeggers about the dangers of getting behind the wheel while high, police say.

Out of 207 drivers screened for drugs as part of this year's Don't Drive High campaign, 97 tested positive for cannabis consumption, city police said at a news conference Thursday. That's 47 per cent or nearly half of the drivers who were tested from January to March, which police said is in line with figures from the same time last year, when 43 per cent of the 148 drivers who got oral fluid tests were positive for the drug.

Carney convenes Canada-U.S. committee, warns tariffs slowing both global and Canadian economies

Prime Minister Mark Carney emerged from a meeting with his Canada-U.S. committee in Ottawa on Friday warning the global economy is starting to slow, and saying he's directed officials to prepare for negotiations with the Trump administration next month. 

Describing the meeting as "a good, long discussion on several aspects," the Liberal leader said a lot has happened in the last week since U.S. President Donald Trump introduced his tariff policy. Carney said aside from China's decision to slap counter-tariffs on U.S. goods, there has been "a really marked tightening in financial conditions," and that there are "the initial signs of slowing in the global economy."

Hundreds of workers laid off at Ingersoll, Ont. assembly plant as GM halts production

The General Motors CAMI Assembly Plant in Ingersoll, Ont., will shut down next month with plans to re-open in the fall at half capacity.

The company said in a statement Friday that production is coming to halt as a direct result of the market, and available inventory to build the BrightDrop electric delivery vehicles manufactured at the plant. "CAMI is making operational and employment adjustments to balance inventory and align production schedules with current demand," GM said in a statement.

Landfill search for missing Hamilton woman Shalini Singh extended 2 weeks, police say

The search through a Hamilton landfill for the remains of missing woman Shalini Singh will be extended by two weeks, says the lead detective.

Investigators began combing through the Glanbrook site in late February and planned to do so until April 18, said Det. Sgt. Daryl Reid in a video update Thursday. He said they've extended the search by two more weeks.

Vaisakhi marks the first harvest and the coming of a new year, according to the Vancouver Khalsa Diwan Society, which organizes the parade. For Sikhs, it also marks the creation of the order of the Khalsa in 1699 — a defining moment in Sikh history which gave the Sikh faith its final form.

Police open fire on stolen truck that later hit house, caused explosion

Winnipeg police officers opened fire on a stolen pickup truck they say was driven toward them as the driver tried to flee, before the truck crashed into a house and caused an explosion Friday night.

Around 6 p.m., officers saw a Ford F250, which had been reported stolen, headed northbound on Home Street, between Portage and St. Matthews avenues in the city's West End. Police blocked off the single lane of traffic with their cruiser in an attempt to stop the truck, but the driver then reversed and hit another vehicle, according to a Saturday news release from the Winnipeg Police Service.

Cambrian College looking to suspend several programs

Sudbury's Cambrian College is the latest in Ontario to look at suspending several of its academic programs.

"At the April 23 meeting of the Cambrian College Board of Governors, college administration will be recommending that the intake of new students into several programs be suspended for the fall term beginning this September," said a statement issued by Cambrian on Friday. "Most of the programs in question rely heavily on international student enrolment. Most are not eligible for post-graduate work permits, as a result of federal policy changes. Furthermore, there is not enough domestic enrolment to warrant a new intake at this time."
