Sask. health-care workers call for action, higher wages at legislature
On Wednesday, buses filled with health-care workers from across the province arrived at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building, calling for fair wages and greater respect for front-line workers. Wednesday's rally, which CUPE says was attended by hundreds, was a push for wages that reflect the rising cost of living, and recognition for the essential work health-care workers perform every day.
"We have been without a contract for over two years now and health-care workers have not seen a single increase in wages for the past three years," said Bashir Jalloh, president of Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 5430. CUPE 5430 represents more than 14,000 health-care workers in over 200 job classifications across Saskatchewan.

Quebec has officially passed a law requiring doctors to work in the public health-care system for five years after obtaining a medical degree in the province.
Law 83, adopted on Thursday by a vote of 72 to 30, is intended to improve access to health care for Quebecers by preventing doctors from exiting the public system for the private system.
"The universal health-care system, financed by the people of Quebec, must enable everyone to consult a doctor when they need to," Health Minister Christian Dubé said in a statement.

Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia has declared a mistrial in the case against five former world junior hockey players accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a London, Ont., hotel in 2018.
The stunning and rare move comes three days after a 14-member jury was chosen to hear the case against the men, all of whom had careers in the NHL at some point. Michael McLeod, Dillon Dubé, Cal Foote, Carter Hart and Alex Formenton each faces one count of sexual assault. McLeod faces an additional count of being a party to an offence. They've all pleaded not guilty.

A long-planned overhaul of Ottawa's bus routes takes effect Sunday in what the city calls the largest bus service change in its history. OC Transpo says its "New Ways to Bus" initiative adjusts service to post-pandemic ridership and realigns routes with its expanded rail network. The changes will affect most bus routes: some are cut completely, while others are being reduced or expanded in certain neighbourhoods.

A fast-moving grass fire has forced more than 300 residents in Manitoba's Traverse Bay area to evacuate their homes as local firefighters battle the blaze.
Around 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, the Victoria Beach Fire Department confirmed in a public announcement posted to Facebook that it was fighting a fast-spreading grass fire in the beach community located about 100 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg on Lake Winnipeg's southern shore. "The sky was just full of black and white smoke, just huge billowing smoke coming up," said Brent Gillon, who drove by the fire around 4:30 p.m., before the emergency alert went out to the public.

9 people killed, more than 20 hurt after SUV rams into Vancouver street festival
Nine people have been killed and multiple others injured after the driver of a black SUV slammed into a crowd Saturday evening at a street festival in Vancouver celebrating the contributions of the Filipino Canadian community, police say.
It happened shortly after 8 p.m. PT, a few blocks from East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, where the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party was winding down, after drawing up to 100,000 people through the day.
Interim Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai says a 30-year-old Vancouver man is now in custody.
In a statement read Sunday morning, Prime Minister Mark Carney said more than 20 people were injured.
