Sweeping Ottawa bus changes take effect Sunday
A long-planned overhaul of Ottawa's bus routes takes effect Sunday in what the city calls the largest bus service change in its history. OC Transpo says its "New Ways to Bus" initiative adjusts service to post-pandemic ridership and realigns routes with its expanded rail network. The changes will affect most bus routes: some are cut completely, while others are being reduced or expanded in certain neighbourhoods.
The following routes are not changing: 6, 14, 19, 21, 23, 38, 42, 44, 45, 47, 49, 51, 57, 67, 84, 87, 90, 98, 125, 139, 158, 221, 222, 228, 262 and 277. You can see how the changes affect your commute on OC Transpo's New Ways to Bus website.

A consequential election ends with a stark choice and an uncertain future
John Duffy, the late political strategist and author, began Fights of Our Lives, his lively and encyclopedic account of the federal campaigns that shaped this country, with a simple premise — one always worth returning to at moments like this.
"Elections matter," he wrote.
Writing in 2002, Duffy was pushing back against what he saw as the lazy cynicism of "academics, journalists and political dissenters of various stripes" who had "worked very hard for many years to convince voters in democracies that elections are inconsequential or, even worse, rigged, so that this or that social group maintains dominance no matter what happens at the polls."
Duffy's view was that elections — fundamentally human endeavours — are precarious and dynamic, and the choices that leaders and voters make are consequential.

More than 300 residents evacuated as grass fire burns in Traverse Bay
A fast-moving grass fire has forced more than 300 residents in Manitoba's Traverse Bay area to evacuate their homes as local firefighters battle the blaze.
Around 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, the Victoria Beach Fire Department confirmed in a public announcement posted to Facebook that it was fighting a fast-spreading grass fire in the beach community located about 100 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg on Lake Winnipeg's southern shore. "The sky was just full of black and white smoke, just huge billowing smoke coming up," said Brent Gillon, who drove by the fire around 4:30 p.m., before the emergency alert went out to the public.

Is the race narrowing in Poilievre's own riding? Here's what residents think
As reports suggest a tightening race in Pierre Poilievre's Carleton riding, both Liberal and Conservative supporters remain confident. Liberals back Bruce Fanjoy’s chances of unseating Poilievre, while Conservatives believe he will retain the seat. 11 Killed in Vancouver Festival Tragedy; Suspect Charged with Murder
Kai-Ji Adam Lo, 30, was charged Sunday with eight counts of second-degree murder in relation to the crash at the Lapu Lapu Festival on Saturday. The youngest of the eleven people killed was five years old. Dozens more people were injured when an SUV rammed into a crowd at the event.
Vancouver police are defending their safety preparations for the festival, saying they had no indication of any threats beforehand. Officials say they are not investigating the attack as an act of terrorism, and the suspect has had previous interactions with police and mental health workers. Organizers of the event say they're receiving support from around the world, and the Filipino community would "show true resilience" in the face of the tragedy.

Canadians vote today after fierce campaign shaped by Trump
Millions of Canadians are expected to cast their ballots today in a pivotal election that will decide who will lead the country through a trade battle with the United States.
The 36-day campaign has been nothing short of remarkable for the leading contenders: Liberal Leader Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre. Just a few months ago, polls suggested Poilievre was all but guaranteed to snap up the majority government he'd long been waiting for, after Canadians soured on former prime minister Justin Trudeau.

Paramedic who tended to dying cop to face cross-examination in Bellefeuille murder trial
Alain Bellefeuille is on trial for first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder after fatally shooting OPP Sgt. Eric Mueller and wounding two other officers during a wellness check in Bourget, Ontario, on May 11, 2023. While it’s undisputed that Bellefeuille fired the shots, the trial focuses on whether he knew he was shooting at police and whether he acted in self-defence. Bellefeuille has pleaded not guilty and is expected to testify after the Crown presents its case. A paramedic's account of arriving at the still-dangerous scene will be cross-examined this week.

Polls are closed in Atlantic provinces as country waits to see who will be Canada's next prime minister
The polls are now closed in the four Atlantic provinces, and their incoming results are the first indication of how the country is feeling after a monumental election campaign largely shaped by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Early results are trickling in from Newfoundland and Labrador, where polls closed at 7 p.m. ET, and from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P.E.I. where they closed 30 minutes later. Polls are now also closed in the Quebec riding of Gaspésie-Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine-Listuguj.
It's still quite early, and in some cases just a small percentage of polls are reporting in ridings. While the results are preliminary, the Conservatives are seeing some encouraging numbers in Atlantic Canada.

Liberal Bruce Fanjoy topples Pierre Poilievre in Carleton
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is projected to lose his longtime rural Ottawa seat to Liberal Bruce Fanjoy. Poilievre had won the area seven times in a row going back to his first win in 2004. While official results are not available, the preliminary results suggest Fanjoy won by about 3,800 votes, getting just over 50 per cent support.
"We've focused on the work that we had to do all along and believ[ing] that if we did the work, if we met enough people and spread a positive message, that the numbers would take care of themselves," Fanjoy said on CBC Radio's Ottawa Morning on Tuesday.
