Polls are closed in Atlantic provinces as country waits to see who will be Canada's next prime minister

The polls are now closed in the four Atlantic provinces, and their incoming results are the first indication of how the country is feeling after a monumental election campaign largely shaped by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Early results are trickling in from Newfoundland and Labrador, where polls closed at 7 p.m. ET, and from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P.E.I. where they closed 30 minutes later. Polls are now also closed in the Quebec riding of Gaspésie-Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine-Listuguj.

It's still quite early, and in some cases just a small percentage of polls are reporting in ridings. While the results are preliminary, the Conservatives are seeing some encouraging numbers in Atlantic Canada.

Liberal Bruce Fanjoy topples Pierre Poilievre in Carleton

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is projected to lose his longtime rural Ottawa seat to Liberal Bruce Fanjoy. Poilievre had won the area seven times in a row going back to his first win in 2004. While official results are not available, the preliminary results suggest Fanjoy won by about 3,800 votes, getting just over 50 per cent support.

"We've focused on the work that we had to do all along and believ[ing] that if we did the work, if we met enough people and spread a positive message, that the numbers would take care of themselves," Fanjoy said on CBC Radio's Ottawa Morning on Tuesday.

Liberal gains in Quebec help clinch federal election victory

With some seats still too close to call on Tuesday morning, the Liberals appeared poised to win 43 seats in Quebec. In 2015, when the party won a sweeping majority under leader Justin Trudeau, they won 40.

It was a significant gain for the party, which won 35 seats in the 2021 federal election. The seats helped the Liberals secure a government in Ottawa. As of Tuesday morning, it was still unclear if the Liberals will form a minority or majority government.

In his victory speech, Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government would work toward uniting Canadians, and he mentioned Quebec specifically.

Northern Health hit with court order after failing to respond to request about care home conditions

B.C.'s privacy watchdog has taken the unusual step of issuing a court order compelling the province's Northern Health Authority to respond to freedom of information requests about the conditions at a long-term care facility it operates in Fort St. John, B.C.

Caroline Alexander says she made the requests as a member of the resident and family council at the Peace Villa, the only long-term care facility in the city of approximately 21,000 people in northeastern B.C. Councils are meant to advocate for residents and families at care facilities and work with operators to make improvements.

Carleton was Poilievre's riding to lose. When he did, it came as a shock to many

The startling upset for Conservatives and their leader Pierre Poilievre, who lost the Ottawa-area riding he'd held for nearly 21 years to a Liberal newcomer, had local voters buzzing the morning after.

By the time Carleton's giant ballots were counted, Carleton's MP-elect Bruce Fanjoy had garnered about 51 per cent of the vote to Poilievre's 46 per cent.

Residents of the rural Ottawa riding who spoke with CBC News on Tuesday offered a variety of reactions and theories about why Poilievre had been ousted.

Michelle Cole said U.S. President Donald Trump's threats against Canada's economy and sovereignty definitely played a role.

"Nothing against Poilievre, but the way Canada's going, you can imagine that a lot of people were voting the same way in this riding," she said.

"I feel bad for him because he has all the experience," Cole added. "He's done a great job — it's just everybody is so on this anti-American kick that it was the wrong time."

Winnipeg woman's brain tumour sample lost by health authorities, lawsuit claims

A Winnipeg woman is suing multiple health authorities in Manitoba after she claims medical staff lost a brain tumour sample when it was sent for lab testing in 2023.

In a statement of claim filed on April 15, a 35-year-old woman alleges staff overseen by Shared Health — the province's health authority — and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) failed to provide a duty of care when they lost the sample and, as a result, gave her an inadequate treatment plan. The allegations have not been proven in court.

U.S. President Donald Trump's chaotic trade war will loom large over the budget, experts recently told CBC News.

On Wednesday, Ontario's Financial Accountability Office (FAO) issued a new report that found U.S. tariffs and Canada's response could result in 68,100 fewer jobs in the province this year.
