OC Transpo offers free weekend of transit, advocates say 'it's a good start'

OC Transpo is offering free service on all buses, trains and Para Transpo this weekend, which transit advocates have welcomed but argue doesn't redress ongoing concerns about service reliability.

The free rides are to thank riders for their patience during a period of disruption, according to Renée Amilcar, the general manager of OC Transpo. "We know that we have been working hard to improve the service, and it was tough on you as a customers," she said.

Substitute touching kids at P.E.I. schools not believed to be sexual at the time, says PSB

Court documents have revealed that substitute teacher Matthew Alan Craswell continued teaching after two incidents of inappropriate touching were reported at different P.E.I. elementary schools. Initially, the Public Schools Branch (PSB) believed the incidents—occurring in June 2023 and April 2024 during classroom games—were non-sexual, involving touching students' arms and stomachs. However, following new evidence presented in court, the PSB now acknowledges the incidents were sexual in nature.

Doctors are urging public health officials in Ontario and Alberta to step up vaccination and messaging efforts as measles outbreaks in those provinces continue to grow.

Ontario reported 223 new confirmed and probable infections of measles over the past week, bringing the outbreak size  above 1,200. As of May 2, a total of 210 confirmed measles cases were reported to Alberta Health. The bulk of Ontario's cases are in the Southwestern Public Health region that includes the city of St. Thomas and surrounding counties. How bayanihan is grounding Filipino Canadians in 'ethics of care' after Lapu-Lapu Day tragedy

"It was meant to be a day filled with music, dancing, food, laughter."

Rev. Expedito Farinas choked up as he addressed mourners on Sunday at St. Mary the Virgin South Hill, an Anglican church with a largely Filipino congregation just a 15-minute walk away from where tragedy had occurred the night before.

The Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party began as a day of "great celebration honouring our heritage, our culture, our tradition," Farinas told CBC Radio's On The Coast.

Hundreds of people sang along to artists like Black Eyed Peas' Apl.de.Ap.

Filipino vendors and food trucks lined the streets to serve the tens of thousands of people who visited throughout the day.

Carleton to cut back on contract instructors amid $32-million budget hole

Carleton University is planning to slash its contract instructor workforce in half as it deals with a $32-million deficit, much to the dismay of the instructors' union.

At a meeting on April 29, the university's board of governors approved its 2025-26 budget, which saw its financial shortfall grow by $6 million over 2024-25 and which includes a plan to avoid a potential $80-million deficit by 2028-29. But the steps being taken to stave off further financial woes is concerning, said Ryan Conrad, a contract instructor and president of Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) local 4600, which represents Carleton's contract instructors, teaching assistants and research assistants.

'Everybody's pulling for the one goal': Search for missing Pictou County children enters third day

As the search for two missing Pictou County children enters its third day, the RCMP officer overseeing the search efforts says foggy conditions Sunday both help and hinder their work.

Lily Sullivan, 6, and Jack Sullivan, 4, were last seen Friday on Gairloch Road in Lansdowne Station, about 20 kilometres southwest of New Glasgow, N.S.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Josh Wiese, who is leading the ground search and rescue operations, says fog gets in the way of drones and helicopters, but the cooler conditions help the searchers, who already face challenging conditions.

B.C. company wants to open $300M made-in-Canada sand mine to fuel anticipated fracking, LNG boom

Vitreo Minerals is proposing a $300 million silica sand mine near Bear Lake, north of Prince George, B.C., to support Canada’s growing liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry by supplying locally sourced sand for hydraulic fracturing. The company argues this would reduce reliance on U.S. imports and create around 150 jobs. However, the proposal has raised concerns among environmental groups, especially as it aligns with the province’s push to fast-track industrial projects, which critics say could undermine B.C.’s climate goals. The public can give feedback at a May 13 open house.

Quebec to mandate formal 'vous' in schools for respect. Teachers say leave it to us

Quebec Education Minister Bernard Drainville says he wants to improve civility in the province's schools by requiring students to address their teachers using a title, such as Mr. or Ms., as well as the more formal and polite form of 'you' in French — vous rather than tu.

Schools will also have an obligation to formalize the value of respect in their codes of conduct and parents will have to sign that code to ensure they are aware of it.

Using vous is a sign of respect, Drainville said during a Friday interview on Radio-Canada's Tout un matin French radio show.

"I think we need that in schools right now," he said, adding it's about respecting adults and respecting one's function and the institution it represents.
