Filipino students at McMaster leading event today to remember victims of Lapu-Lapu Day attack
A gathering led by Filipino groups at McMaster University is aiming to honour the 11 people killed in Vancouver during the Lapu-Lapu Day event last month.
The groups began organizing after realizing there was a need in Hamilton for "a space for us to connect and check in with how people are, because no one's checking in [on us]," said Anabelle Ragsag, a PhD candidate at McMaster's School of Social Work. The gathering takes place Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. within McMaster's Office of Community Engagementβs at 8 Mayfair Crescent.

75 years of Alberta's mission to keep rats at bay
For 75 years, Alberta has maintained a strict rat control program to keep the province rat-free. Patrol teams regularly inspect barns and storage areas along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border to stop rats from settling. The program began in 1950 after Norway rats, which originated in China and spread across North America, were found in Alberta. Napoleon Poulin, a key figure in the program, developed a rodenticide and helped eliminate infestations. Since peaking at 573 in 1959, rat infestations dropped to zero by 2003.

Calgary, Edmonton mayors call potential separatism referendum 'dangerous'
Alberta's two big-city mayors say a separation referendum would be "devastating" to their local economies and is a needless distraction during a period in which the country should be focused on unity.
"It is very dangerous talk," Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi said in an interview with The Canadian Press. "It is dangerous talk for our economy. It's dangerous talk for our social cohesion. It's going to tear apart communities."
Discontent in Western Canada has picked up renewed traction with Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberals winning a mandate in the recent election and a new bill from Premier Danielle Smith's government that would make it easier to bring citizen-led questions to a referendum.

Home sellers hid foundation cracks with storage containers, buyers' lawsuit alleges
Homebuyers in Winnipegβs Linden Woods neighborhood are suing the previous homeowners and a home inspector, alleging they hid major foundation damage. According to the lawsuit filed on May 1, the sellers allegedly concealed three severe cracks near the garage using storage bins and falsely claimed no knowledge of the damage in a disclosure statement. The buyers discovered the cracks after moving in and hired a structural engineer, who confirmed the damage. Repairs are estimated to cost between $40,000 and $50,000.

More Alberta municipalities scrapping photo radar in response to provincial restrictions
The number of municipalities using photo radar and red-light cameras in Alberta has dropped by more than a third since last year, according to figures from the province. Seventeen municipalities, including Edmonton and Calgary, still have automated traffic enforcement programs β down from 26 last year.
The provincial government announced in December it would be banning photo radar on all provincial highways and connectors, restricting its use to school, playground and construction zones and no longer allowing speed-on-green cameras at intersections.

Fire near Fort Smith, N.W.T., under control after weekend evacuation alert
A wildfire near Fort Smith, N.W.T., is now under control, meaning it's not expected to grow beyond its current boundaries, according to N.W.T. Fire.
The Northwest Territories' fire agency made the declaration Sunday evening around 7 p.m., adding that some "mop-up work" is still required and that those in the area should continue to remain cautious.
The town had been on evacuation alert for a period of time Saturday for a wildfire started around Primrose Lane and Carl's Drive, within a few hundred metres of homes, according to Mike Westwick, manager of wildfire prevention and mitigation with the Department of Environment and Climate Change.
The fire is suspected to be human-caused.

Woman tells defence she felt like 'an object' with ex-world junior hockey players accused of sexual assault
At the sexual assault trial involving five members of the 2018 Canadian world junior hockey team, the complainant, known as E.M., is being cross-examined by defense lawyers. E.M. testified that she βfelt like an objectβ during the alleged assaults in a hotel room. Defense questioning has focused on her alcohol consumption, memory accuracy, and statements about her weight, which one lawyer suggested were intended to make her seem smaller than the accused β all of whom have pleaded not guilty. The proceedings continue with graphic and sensitive content.

B.C. First Nation blocks construction of bridge replacement project
A First Nation in B.C.'s Interior is blocking access to the R.W. Bruhn Bridge construction site in Sicamous, B.C., over the alleged exclusion of its workers and businesses from the government-funded infrastructure project.
Since 10 a.m., Monday, four dump trucks from the Splatsin Development Corporation (SDC) have been parked at both ends of the bridge, halting construction on the new four-lane replacement. The action was initiated by Splatsin First Nation and SDC in response to what they describe as a pattern of broken agreements by the Aecon Group Inc. and Emil Anderson Construction, the two firms contracted to build the bridge.

'Where do you want us to go?' People living along Hamilton's rail trail hide as city says they must leave
When Hamilton couple Margaret de Jong and Calvin Graham got a city notice ordering them to leave their rail trail encampment last week, they say they had no choice but to retreat deeper into the forested side of the escarpment.
"We basically camouflaged our tent so it looks like a bush," Graham, 34, told CBC Hamilton Sunday. "We could see everything that happened, but nobody could see us."
They've lived in a tent near the rail trail since the fall of 2023. Because de Jong is unhoused, her two children live in foster care, which has been devastating, she said. But she and Graham have nowhere else to go.
