B.C. First Nation blocks construction of bridge replacement project
A First Nation in B.C.'s Interior is blocking access to the R.W. Bruhn Bridge construction site in Sicamous, B.C., over the alleged exclusion of its workers and businesses from the government-funded infrastructure project.
Since 10 a.m., Monday, four dump trucks from the Splatsin Development Corporation (SDC) have been parked at both ends of the bridge, halting construction on the new four-lane replacement. The action was initiated by Splatsin First Nation and SDC in response to what they describe as a pattern of broken agreements by the Aecon Group Inc. and Emil Anderson Construction, the two firms contracted to build the bridge.

'Where do you want us to go?' People living along Hamilton's rail trail hide as city says they must leave
When Hamilton couple Margaret de Jong and Calvin Graham got a city notice ordering them to leave their rail trail encampment last week, they say they had no choice but to retreat deeper into the forested side of the escarpment.
"We basically camouflaged our tent so it looks like a bush," Graham, 34, told CBC Hamilton Sunday. "We could see everything that happened, but nobody could see us."
They've lived in a tent near the rail trail since the fall of 2023. Because de Jong is unhoused, her two children live in foster care, which has been devastating, she said. But she and Graham have nowhere else to go.

Honda Delays $15B EV Project in Canada Amid Slow Demand, U.S. Tariffs
Honda has postponed its $15 billion EV investment in Ontario by around two years due to slowing demand and new U.S. tariffs. The plan included a battery plant and retooling for EV production, aiming for 240,000 vehicles annually by 2028. Existing operations in Alliston remain unaffected. The Canadian and Ontario governments had pledged $5B in support.

More Alberta municipalities scrapping photo radar in response to provincial restrictions
The number of municipalities using photo radar and red-light cameras in Alberta has dropped by more than a third since last year, according to figures from the province. Seventeen municipalities, including Edmonton and Calgary, still have automated traffic enforcement programs β down from 26 last year.
The provincial government announced in December it would be banning photo radar on all provincial highways and connectors, restricting its use to school, playground and construction zones and no longer allowing speed-on-green cameras at intersections.

Union representing Air Canada's flight attendants files for conciliation as talks stall
The CUPE division representing 10,000 Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flight attendants has filed for conciliation with the federal labour minister, citing a breakdown in contract talks. Their main demand is higher pay, highlighting that entry-level full-time attendants earn about $1,951 per month. The union says working conditions and cost of living have worsened significantly since their last contract, which expired in March, and accuses the airline of ignoring these realities.

Prince Albert police partner with Sask. Marshals to install biometric health sensors in cells
The Prince Albert Police Service will install health monitoring technology in some of its detention cells to alert staff if someone goes into medical distress.
Devices will be mounted on the ceiling cells and use radar to monitor heart rate, elevated temperature and respiratory concerns of someone inside the cell. "We're hearing from our partner agencies and Estevan and Regina, who have implemented the software and have already reported back that it saved lives," Patrick Nogier, Prince Albert's police chief, said in an interview Tuesday.

Will the Liberals' campaign promises help fix the housing crisis?
Mark Carney led the Liberals to a fourth term of government thanks to factors like U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war and annexation threats, as well as a campaign built on a few key promises such as a plan to solve Canada's housing crisis.
The plan that the Liberal Party described as "most ambitious housing plan since the Second World War" promises to "get the federal government back into the business of home building" by creating a new Crown corporation.
It covers financing, development charges and tax policies. It doesn't mention that Canada recognizes housing as a human right through a law passed in 2019.

B.C. forecast for drought and wildfire is bleak, but don't panic yet, say officials
B.C. is already reporting some areas of extreme drought, which could spell bad news for the summer ahead.
In the province's first drought update of 2025, a few areas have been highlighted as regions of concern, including the Fort Nelson, North Peace and East Peace regions which have been recorded as having moderate to severe drought conditions. Most of the province has yet to be assessed but Vancouver Island is also reported as having level three drought conditions, on a scale of zero to five.

Highway protests won't be tolerated during G7 summit in Kananaskis, head of security says
The head of security for the upcoming G7 leaders' summit in Kananaskis says his group is still working with the Town of Banff on the precise location of a "demonstration zone" for protesters to express their opinions, but it's already been determined where demonstrators won't be allowed β on highways.
"We're not going to be able to tolerate a protest on a highway," Alberta RCMP Chief Supt. David Hall told The Homestretch on Thursday.
"It's not safe for motorists; it's not safe for the protesters, themselves. And so that's something that we would look to quickly move off of a highway, in the event that a protest established on the highway."

Experts point to anomalies in 'unprecedented' case of missing N.S. children
Lilly Sullivan, 6, and Jack Sullivan, 4, have been missing since May 2 after reportedly wandering from their rural Nova Scotia home. Despite an extensive six-day search involving ground teams, dogs, drones, and helicopters, no trace of the children has been found.
