'It's unpredictable': Shifting winds bring fresh wildfire threat to La Ronge, Sask.
A wildfire near La Ronge, Saskatchewan, prompted an emergency alert Friday morning as strong southwest winds pushed flames toward the industrial park and Eagle Point areas. Although an evacuation order was already in place, remaining residents were urged to seek safety immediately.
Tammy Cook-Searson, chief of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, called the situation serious and unpredictable. The Pisew Fire, which started near Hall Lake, has expanded and caused significant structure damage in Hall Lake and Sucker River.

Nathaniel Veltman Appeals Terrorism Conviction in 2021 London, Ontario Truck Attack
Nathaniel Veltman, convicted of four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder for the 2021 truck attack on a Muslim family in London, Ontario, has filed an appeal. In February 2024, a judge ruled the attack constituted terrorism, sentencing Veltman to five life terms. The appeal challenges both the convictions and the terrorism designation. The 2021 attack, which killed four members of the Afzaal family and injured a fifth, was Canada’s first murder trial involving terrorism charges.

Indigenous business leaders support push to build major projects — but want 'terms that work for us'
Indigenous business leaders gathered outside Calgary this week for an energy industry conference say they're not opposed to building major projects quickly — in fact, they're all for it.
But as Ontario and B.C. pass bills criticized by First Nations in those provinces for trampling on their rights in the service of fast-tracking infrastructure, they warn that Canada risks backsliding into a more contentious relationship with Indigenous communities that will ultimately delay projects further.

Financial assistance for Sask. wildfire evacuees doubling, officials say in latest update
Financial assistance is being increased for wildfire evacuees in Saskatchewan, the province said Saturday, as officials with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency also said there have been no more human starts to the fires in northern Saskatchewan that have already forced thousands from their homes.
"Many of the large fires have not grown, as they've reached lakes, slowing their growth," said Bryan Chartrand, the agency's executive director of land operations, during a Saturday afternoon news conference. "Things are kind of staying where they're at," he said, with 24 active fires now burning in the province.

DHL Express workers on strike after company locks them out, adding to parcel sector turmoil
Unifor says DHL Express Canada locked out workers just after midnight Sunday as the two sides failed to reach a contract deal, injecting more labour turmoil into the country's parcel delivery market.
The union, which represents 2,100 truck drivers, couriers and warehouse workers across seven provinces, says they went on strike in response at 11 a.m. ET.
Unifor says the German-owned carrier is proposing to change the driver pay system and planning to use replacement workers before legislation banning them comes into effect on June 20.

Northern wildfires force Sask. courts to shift operations to Saskatoon
The first indication that it's not business as usual at La Ronge docket court is that it's taking place at the provincial courthouse in Saskatoon. The second indication is that the judge, Murray Pelletier, is on the bench wearing a dress shirt instead of robes. The Crown and defence are appearing remotely on a video screen.
On this weekday morning, Pelletier is casually chatting with staff, offering updates on the status of his grandson, who is back in the northern community and staying at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. There are jokes about who needs to smoke cigarettes when you only need to step outside.

Defence targets E.M.'s credibility, judge questions 'consent videos' shown at world juniors sex assault trial (LIVE)
The sexual assault trial of five former Hockey Canada world junior players continues in Ontario Superior Court, with defence teams and the Crown delivering closing arguments. Michael McLeod’s lawyer has concluded his submissions, and Carter Hart’s lawyer, Megan Savard, is now presenting. Earlier, defence lawyer David Humphrey questioned the complainant E.M.’s credibility, claiming she avoided responsibility for her actions on the night of the alleged incident in June 2018. Four of the accused — McLeod, Dillon Dubé, Alex Formenton, and Cal Foote — did not testify, while Hart did. All five men have pleaded not guilty.
